The older you get, the more evident the incompetence of others — including those in authority — becomes. Whether that’s because our insight gets sharper even as our eyesight declines or because the human race is devolving is debatable. While many suffer from “Imposter Syndrome” – myself included – it’s hard to watch the news day in and day out and not conclude that others’ feelings of inadequacy might just be legitimate.
It used to be that poor performance at your job could generally be counted on to get you relieved of that job. These days, however, it seems that failing up is all the rage. So much so that we have circuit attorneys who show up for trials unprepared, can’t keep track of whether their witnesses are dead or alive, and can’t be bothered to seek bond revocation for a defendant who violates the terms of his bond dozens of times, Homeland Security secretaries presiding over a wide-open border while insisting it’s secure, and Transportation secretaries who avoid speaking to or appearing at massive transportation disasters until they’re shamed into it three weeks late.
And not an ounce of ownership or accountability to be found. That’s not how this works – that’s not how any of this works. You don’t get to suck at your job!
