DOJ Stand Down

Recent events suggest that the Department of Justice, which was already under a cloud of suspicion concerning its quite apparent politically partisan approach to law enforcement, has entered a new phase of brazen partisanship which may require that certain inquiries be undertaken before further funding for the Department is considered.

An opportunity to do this presents itself because the current Continuing Resolution that funds the Department’s operations expires on December 3rd (along with the funding for all other Executive Branch Departments). I’d like to suggest that a carve-out be made, allowing the rest of the government to proceed apace while the Department of Justice stands down for a review of its seemingly questionable and highly partisan law enforcement practices, to wit:

On October 4, Attorney General Merrick Garland issued a memo to the FBI instructing the Bureau to “launch a series of additional efforts in the coming days designed to address the rise in criminal conduct directed toward school personnel.” In context, and considering its contents, the memo was widely interpreted as an effort to intimidate, silence, and threaten parents who have been appearing at school board meetings around the country to protest racially-charged, seemingly political indoctrination that has been introduced into K-12 schools in recent months. As we reported here, several state Attorneys General accused the Department of Justice of “weaponizing its resources against parents who dare to advocate for their children.” As if to illustrate how partisan this issue had become, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Chuck Grassley, on October 27 deemed Garland’s memo “inappropriate and out of bounds.”

We have since learned that “an internal National School Board Association (NSBA) memo shows that the Biden White House was ‘actively engaged’ with the NSBA before it sent a letter to the administration asking that federal authorities investigate parents.” In other words, the impetus for Garland’s memo to the FBI was a political set-up coordinated with the Biden White House.

Last week the FBI raided the homes of several current and former Project Veritas journalists. The ostensible purpose for this Search For Law Enforcement Evidence was to find the stolen/missing/discarded diary of the president’s daughter, Ashley Biden. When the FBI didn’t find it, they raided the home of Project Veritas founder James O’Keefe as well.

Whatever fig leaf value the “Ashley Biden Diary” story might have had, it evaporated today when The New York Times suddenly started publishing privileged communications between Project Veritas and its legal team. And this on the heels of a federal judge ordering the FBI to stop extracting data from James O’Keefe’s cell phones, seized in the raid. Once again, federal law enforcement has been used to deliver a political hit on the Biden Administration’s enemies. As they say on social media, let that sink in.

And now we have just heard that the Department of Justice has indicted Steve Bannon, known Democratic Party Hate Object, for contempt of Congress. He failed to heed a subpoena from the January 6 Commission. I’d lost count of how many criminal referrals Republicans had sent to the Obama Administration DOJ for precisely the same violation. They even held Attorney General Eric Holder himself in contempt. Nothing ever happens when Republicans send these referrals to DOJ. But now this Limburger-stinky Political Witch Hunt subpoena suddenly draws an indictment.

This needs looking into. There is a pattern here, and it fairly screams “politically partisan law enforcement.” Will that be denied? Of course. Whoever would do such a thing would surely lie about it. Regardless, it is time to put an end to it.

We need hearings, and interrogatories, and testimony from Attorney General Garland and FBI Director Wray. And we need all of that before the Department of Justice sees another dime of appropriated funds. If that means they have to furlough 70% of the staff on December 3rd, then so be it. There is no place for a politically partisan law enforcement agency in a Democratic Republic. We have such an agency, we need to fix it, and we need to make it stop what it is doing while we effect repairs.
