Why Would Anyone Support Sexually Inappropriate Material in Schools?

I have been writing for years about how progressives are trying to leverage government-run schools to indoctrinate schoolchildren into their ideology. Along with covering the efforts to trans children, I have also written about sexually inappropriate material being presented in classrooms and made available in school libraries.

Over those years, I have been puzzled as to how so many people could oppose the notion that this content should not be in K-12 institutions. Yet, a recent Senate Judiciary hearing on the matter reveals that there are still plenty who are fighting to keep these books in schools.

During the hearing, Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) and others questioned some of these individuals on the issue.

Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., pressed the Illinois Secretary of State and a student activist during a Senate judiciary hearing on censorship and book bans.

The American Library Association (ALA), the oldest and largest library nonprofit in the world, claimed that the “censorship” of sexually explicit books in children’s libraries is discriminatory to the LGBTQ+ community.

“In looking at the titles of the most challenged books from last year, it’s obvious that the pressure groups are targeting books about LGBTQIA+ people and people of color,” ALA President Emily Drabinski said in a statement Monday. “At ALA, we are fighting for the freedom to choose what you want to read. Shining a light on the harmful workings of these pressure groups is one of the actions we must take to protect our right to read.”

The American Library Association has been at the forefront of the push to subject children to objectionable material in schools. As I wrote earlier, the organization has become a highly political entity pushing a distinctly socialist agenda. The group claims that the number of books that are supposedly being censored increased by 65 percent in 2023.

Yet, even the author of “Gender Queer,” a controversial book that shows graphic depictions of gay sex, acknowledged that her book was not appropriate for kids.

Many of these books have graphic descriptions and even pictures of sex acts and are not the type of material most parents would show to their young ones. So why are so many people so opposed to the idea of keeping them out of the classroom?

Based on my observations, there are only three motivations for this.

To start with, most of those pushing to include these books in schools likely do not know or understand exactly what is in them. I believe the majority of these people fall into this category. I’ve had plenty of conversations with people over the years in which they assumed that conservatives who want to remove these books are doing so out of some sort of bigotry against the LGBTQ community.

However, when I actually showed them what is in these books – especially “Gender Queer” – they tend to back off their positions, at least when it comes to the overt forms of sexuality shown in these works. Indeed, I believe most reasonable people can agree that the content shown to children should be age-appropriate.

The second category is similar to the first but with a political bent. I think much of the support for these books comes from a reactionary response to conservatives opposing them. It is a knee-jerk reaction I see from folks on both sides of the aisle. If conservatives are against something, folks on the left must automatically be for it.

The last category is the most dangerous. It is those who fully understand what is being included in these books but wish to push it on children anyway. These are people who have no qualms with sexualizing children. They seek to use the school system to foist their ideology on young ones with the aim of turning out a generation of adults who buy into progressive causes.

For these people, schools are not supposed to be bastions of learning. Instead, they should be centers for indoctrinating kids. Since progressives do not have enough support to dominate Congress and other government offices, they are playing the long game, conditioning youngsters to embrace their ideas so that when they grow into voting adults, the hard left will amass more power.

Fortunately, most of those crying about “book banning” are doing so out of ignorance and not malice. For these folks, all it takes is some education and exposure to the truth for them to change their minds. However, it is not enough to show them the truth – we must also get these people into the fight. If these people realized what is in the books that are being given to their children, there would be fewer standing on the sidelines. This is how we can eventually defeat those who fall into that third category.
