Fifty Shades of 'Pray'? Presbyterian Minister Plans 'BDSM 101' Workshop for Christian School Students

College and culture have, in a word, changed. Example: A school in Tennessee recently saw the planning of a workshop on BDSM sex.

In case you're unfamiliar, the erotic initials stand for "Bondage, Domination, Sadism (the inflicting of pain), and Masochism (the experiencing of pain)." So if you like it rough and wrist-wrapped, BDSM is for you. It's also, as it turns out, for students at Rhodes College -- at least that's the determination of Beatrix Weil. As reported by Memphis's Fox 13, she organized the highly instructional "BDSM 101" symposium.

An advertisement for the extravaganza promised privacy and put the "sensual" in "consensual":

BDSM 101

[B]eatrix will host a local dominatrix to share wisdom on how to safely, sanely, and consensually learn about bondage, discipline/domination, sadism/submission, and masochism. There will be an opportunity to ask questions anonymously.

It's true -- shackled sexual shenanigans don't have to be shady. Indeed, Beatrix (she/her) isn't some T-shirted libertine slob. In fact, she constantly wears a collar -- and despite the pending discussion's coverage, not the dog kind. She serves Presbyterian Rhodes College as a chaplain.

A minute on the minister, courtesy of EvergreenMemphis.org:

[Beatrix] was ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA) in July 2017.

She has served in many different contexts, including a high school, hospital, college campus ministry, and numerous churches of different traditions. She attended Princeton Theological Seminary (M.Div., 2017) and the University of Notre Dame (BBA, 2014), but grew up just outside of New York City.

The masochism mastermind may or may not be into (safe, sane, consensual) choking and gagging; either way, she loves to hurl:

Her favorite places in Memphis are Overton Park and Crosstown Concourse. She enjoys swimming and playing Irish sports like hurling and Gaelic football.

Beatrix is certainly in sexy step with America's religious revolution. Gone are Quaker-ish notions of Christians; these days, God-fearers can get their freak on -- and let that flag fly. Institutionally, it's a time of sex, gender, and Jesus:

Amid transformation, though, hitches are bound to happen. Such is the case with BDSM 101: The workshop has been whipped by the crop of cancellation. Per WHBQ on November 13th, a statement from Rhodes College read thusly:

The proposed event was cancelled Friday as soon as it came to our attention. It was not a college-sanctioned event. No such event is planned for our campus.

At least one enrollee isn't unhappy:

“I think it is absolutely ridiculous," Rhodes College student Coleman Clay said in response to the class. "I don’t think anything sexual like that or any seminar like that should be held on a college campus. Even though this is a private school and they can get away with it, I don’t think that that belongs here, especially at Rhodes where I go. I’m not proud of it."

Even so, there's always next semester. In fact, per National Review, Beatrix hosted a freshman seminar this month titled "Let's Talk About Sex" -- featuring the same dominatrix scheduled for BDSM 101. While not specifically required, the course fulfilled a Rhodes prerequisite. According to an obtained email from the chaplain -- who purportedly advises Christian, Muslim, and Jewish attendees -- success was secured:

"It went so well that I've had my first angry parent phone call to the President's Office because of it. It took six years of working at this school, but hello, I've finally *made it*."

For now, people wanting to "make it" while tied and taught lessons will have to bid BDSM 101 adieu. Hopefully, they got their fix with "Let's Talk About Sex." So goes our new Christian normal: In the past, faith-based schools talked of freeing folks from bondage; these days, they're telling students how to get into it.
