Bill Kristol Tries to Read Trump's Mind, Fails, in New Column

Bill Kristol, that bulwark of The Bulwark, is suffering from one of the worst cases of Trump Derangement Syndrome that we've seen to date. His profile as a (ahem) Republican has fallen far since the Bush 43 years; his "Weekly Standard" folded, his legacy media gigs are drying up, and he's left with... The Bulwark.

In his latest outpouring of TDS symptoms, he has a piece at (of course) The Bulwark called "Reading Trump's Mind." Newsbuster's Mark Finkelstein has some thoughts, and, not surprisingly, so do I.

Bill Kristol's Weekly Standard folded in 2018. His gigs at ABC and Fox News were not renewed.

Should Kristol suffer a similar fate at The Bulwark, the fiercely anti-Trump website where he serves as editor-at-large, Bill should consider opening shop in a local strip mall: "Mystic Mister William Sees All, Tells All."

The suggestion arises in light of Kristol's Bulwark column today: "Reading Trump’s Mind."

In it, Kristol writes satire like he's comedian Larry David, posing as if he were President Trump as he conducts a review of multiple senior aides. The prism through which he judges them all is their usefulness to him "in 2028."

Now, I'm going to disagree with Mr. Finkelstein on one thing: I don't think Kristol is writing satire—well, not intentionally. I think he really means what he writes.

Speaking of what he writes: Check out some highlights.

Thus, "Trump":

  • Concludes that, "because he screwed up too many times," he must fire Pete Hegseth. Trump does so regretfully because: "He was willing to do what it takes to get a military that’s loyal to me. Which is g*****n important for 2028."

In summary: "Bill Kristol predicts President Trump will pull off a military coup to remain in power." That's just daffy. Trump selected Pete Hegseth because Hegseth agrees with the president's agenda to return our armed forces to a force of warfighters, that the mission is first. The armed forces are not a jobs program for the paranoid.

  • Says that AG "Pam" and FBI Director "Kash" are "great," because "they never tell me I can’t do anything," and "having Justice and the FBI at my disposal—that’s important for 2028."

Again, Kristol is blasting out an outpouring of TDS; of course, Kristol doesn't explain how having the Justice Department loyal to Trump is important for 2028.

As for Homeland Security:

  • Isn't impressed by Homeland Security Secretary "Kristi" Noem's judgment, but "what matters is that the people under her at DHS are making sure that agency is loyal. They’ll be useful in 2028."

See above. Bill Kristol's attempts at telepathy are failing him badly.

And then, back to the military:

  • When it comes to replacing Hegseth, "Trump" considers two candidates. Of four-star general Charlie Flynn, Trump says he's told that "he’ll be with us when it counts, if you know what I mean."

No, Bill, we don't know what you mean. I don't think you do, either. I think you may be tap-dancing around the idea that Donald Trump is going to try to Julius Caesar himself into a lifetime presidency, but nobody serious is worried about that.

Bill Kristol is nobody serious.

This is embarrassing. Bill Kristol used to have a voice in conservative media, but he's lost it. This is Stage IV Trump Derangement Syndrome. Kristol is suffering from a fevered imagination. He's trying to prognosticate and is failing badly.

I will essay a prognostication of my own: In January of 2029, Donald Trump will shake hands with the 48th President of the United States - hopefully JD Vance or someone of his caliber - and walk away into a well-deserved retirement. At that point, Bill Kristol will be spending some time wiping egg from his face.
