Argentina's President Javier Milei, generally regarded (with reason) as one of President Trump's international allies, seems to be of the considered opinion that Argentina can and should determine health care policy for its own people. To that end, Argentina is considering following President Trump's lead and pulling out of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Argentina has announced it will pull out of the World Health Organization (WHO), mirroring a similar move by US President Donald Trump last month.

“President (Javier) Milei instructed (foreign minister) Gerardo Werthein to withdraw Argentina’s participation in the World Health Organization,” presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni said at a news conference on Wednesday.

“We Argentinians will not allow an international organization to intervene in our sovereignty, much less in our health,” he added.

This comes on the heels of President Trump pulling the United States out of the WHO.

Trump, whom Milei considers an ideological ally, announced on his first day back in the White House in January he is withdrawing the United States from the WHO, drawing criticism from public health experts.

Adorni said Argentina’s decision was based on “profound differences regarding… health management, especially during the pandemic that… led us to the longest lockdown in human history and a lack of independence in the face of the political influence of some states.”

A statement later released from Argentina’s presidential office accused WHO of causing economic damage during the Covid-19 pandemic by “[promoting] endless quarantines.”

This populist revolution isn't just happening in the United States. President Milei is putting the interests of Argentina ahead of the rest of the world, which is appropriate; he is essentially adopting an "Argentina First" policy, just as President Trump has proclaimed an "America First" policy.

It's painfully obvious that this is what a national government should do - see to the interests of the citizenry first - and yet too many nations these days (like the U.S. under Democrats) don't operate that way. But the times, they are a'changing.

While Argentina notes that the WHO works in Argentina, it's unclear as to precisely what they do - and it would appear that whatever they do, they are bypassing, to some extent at least, the Argentinian government.

Though WHO works in Argentina, Adorni said his country does not receive financing from WHO for health management. “Therefore, this measure… does not represent a loss of funds for the country nor does it affect the quality of services,” he said.

He claimed the withdrawal would provide “greater flexibility to implement policies” in Argentina’s interests and “greater availability of resources.”

Argentina's economy is rebounding under El Presidente Milei's libertarian policies. Inflation is moderating, the Argentinian peso is recovering, and a nation that was once a South American economic powerhouse is regaining something of its former strength. In fact, Argentina has a lot going for it - mineral resources, ample arable land, and now, a president who is pushing back on international interference and a Byzantine, overbearing government.

It all has a familiar ring to it, doesn't it?

And, speaking of President Milei - this never gets old.
