Some of Hillary Clinton’s closest aides, including her longtime adviser Huma Abedin, have provided interviews to federal investigators, as the FBI probe into the security of her private email server nears completion, U.S. officials briefed on the investigation tell CNN. The investigation is still ongoing, but so far investigators haven’t found evidence to prove that Clinton willfully violated the law the U.S. officials say.
In recent weeks, multiple aides have been interviewed — some more than once, the officials said. A date for an FBI interview of Clinton has not been set, these officials said, but is expected in the coming weeks. Abedin has cooperated with the probe, the officials said. Lawyers for Abedin declined to comment. The officials say the interviews of Clinton and her aides would be a routine part of an investigation like this.
I’m not going to be pollyannish on this. Despite FBI Director James Comey’s protestations of “no political influence” you’d have to be a total imbecile to think that Barack Obama is going to permit Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democrat nominee, to be indicted. It just isn’t going to happen. No way. The Obama administration has demonstrated time and again its willingness to blatantly break the law to achieve political and policy goals and this will be no different.
On the other hand. The FBI has been involved in this investigation way too long and has devoted too many resources and too much high level time and attention to let it completely drop. There is obvious wrongdoing in regards to Hillary’s server. Her personal “IT” guy took the Fifth, and received immunity from prosecution in return for his cooperation. And there are plenty of low level scalps to suffice if Hillary is let go. Huma Abedin had a completely corrupt arrangement that allowed her to work at State while simultaneously steering business to a contractor. Cheryl Mills and Jake Sullivan obviously mishandled classified information and lied to investigators.
If there is a break in this case that could conceivably result in Hillary Clinton being indicted (indicted… indicted… indicted…) it will come from one of her cronies who decides that cooperating with the authorities looks more promising than facing a long prison term. The most likely pressure point is Huma Abedin who was Hillary’s “companion” for about a decade.
