Liberal talk-show host Bill Maher is an interesting fellow, to say the least. One moment, the mercurial host of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” accuses megachurches of playing QAnon conspiracy videos, says “Trumpism” is a “Christian cult,” and calls Supreme Court Associate Justice Amy Coney Barrett a “f**king nut.”

The next moment, Maher calls out the left for its “hypocrisy” and “presumptuousness,” slams Democrats for blaming COVID deaths on Donald Trump, and rips the liberal media for downplaying the violence of Black Lives Matter.

In other words, during Maher’s brief moments of clarity he makes a lot of sense — just don’t ever put all of your eggs in his basket. Such was the case on this week’s episode of “Real Time,” when Maher mocked social justice warriors, and shredded cancel culture.

Cancel culture is not only real,” Maher said, it’s not “just for celebrities,” anymore.

“Liberals need a Stand Your Ground law … for cancel culture. So that when the woke mob comes after you for some ridiculous offense, you’ll stand your ground, stop apologizing. Because I can’t keep up with who’s on the s*** list.”

“Cancel culture is real, it’s insane, it’s growing exponentially, and it’s coming to a neighborhood near you. If you think it’s just for celebrities — no. In an era when everyone is online, everyone is a public figure.”

He’s right. Say the wrong thing on social media, and you’re banned, whether it be by spending time in the Zuckerville gulag, running afoul of Jack Dorsey’s Twitter and having your account suspended, temporarily or permanently, or having your website shut down.

As noted by Blaze Media, Maher talked about the June 2020 case of Emmanuel Cafferty, a Hispanic man who was fired from his job at San Diego Gas and Electric in May after a photo of him went viral online.

Cafferty’s left hand was photographed hanging out of the window of his work truck while he was driving, in a “gesture” similar to the universal “OK” sign position, which some on the left insist is a sign of “white supremacy.”

Long story, short? The Anti-Defamation League declared Cafferty’s alleged hand gesture a “symbol of hate” and he was fired from his job. He insisted he was simply cracking his knuckles. “I do that a lot when I’m driving,” he said. “It has no racist intent behind it.”

In other words, you’re guilty unless you can prove you’re innocent.

Wait— so if Cafferty was fired…

Emmanuel Cafferty, a utility worker for San Diego Gas & Electric, was fired for making accidentally this symbol out of his window while driving his truck.

Never mind. The alternative is at least as hopeless. Anyway, Cafferty told KSND-TV in San Diego the incident has left him despondent.

“When my supervisor said that I was being accused of doing a white supremacist gesture, that was baffling. I don’t know how long it’s going to take me to get over this, but to lose your dream job for playing with your fingers, that’s a hard pill to swallow.”

Moreover, Cafferty is Mexican American and says he comes from a diverse family of all races. Maher asked:

“Is this really who we want to become? A society of phony, clenched a******* avatars walking on eggshells, always looking over your shoulder about getting ratted out for something that actually has nothing to do with your character or morals?”

My only quibble with Maher’s question is that we are already there. To what degree the insanity gets worse before sanity and common sense make a come-back, if ever, is the real question.

“Think about everything you’ve ever texted, emailed, searched for, tweeted, blogged, or said in passing,” Maher said. “Or now even just witnessed. Someone had a Confederate flag in their dorm room in 1990 and you didn’t do anything?”

Maher also brought up the recent example of “The Mandalorian” star Gina Carano who was fired by Disney for comparing censorship of conservatives to the treatment of Jews in Nazi Germany. Here’s what she wrote on social media that led to her firing:

“Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors… even by children.

“Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews.

“How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”

“She made some Nazi analogy. Who doesn’t these days?” Maher asked. “‘You’re like the Nazis’ is the new ‘I don’t like you.’ ‘It’s always OK when Trump’s the Nazi.'”

To Carano’s point, there isn’t any difference; it’s exactly the same thing.

I’m not suggesting — nor was Gina Carano — that the ultimate objective of the left is to send conservatives to gas chambers, and that’s not what she said or implied. Her question was simply how is hatred based solely on one’s religion any different from hatred based solely on one’s political views? Again, it is not.

As the late Charles Krauthammer said, conservatives think liberals are stupid; liberals think conservatives are evil. Hence, stage 4 Trump Derangement Syndrome; Nancy Pelosi, Fredo Cuomo, Don Lemon unavailable for comment.

“Memo to social justice warriors: When what you’re doing sounds like an Onion headline, stop,” Maher said, in conclusion. Too late, Bill.

That toothpaste ain’t goin’ back in its tube, anytime soon. If ever.
