Candidates were deemed eligible for the debate stage by Politico, a major sponsor of the debate, based on the results of one Morning Consult poll taken in mid-December. The four who qualified are Democrats Adam Schiff, Katie Porter, and Barbara Lee, and Republican Steve Garvey.

At that time two other Republicans, Eric Early and James Bradley, polled at 7 percent each. Bradley is a perennial candidate who's been dogged by fraud allegations, and who's also running for U.S. President in the March primary representing the American Independent Party. Unfortunately, there is no law preventing Bradley from appearing on the same ballot as a member of two different parties, but it does lead to a bit of confusion and logistical difficulties for his apparent supporters, who can't vote for him for president if they're registered Republicans. Had Bradley been forced off the Senate ballot, the debate stage would look quite different since it's likely that those supporting him would have supported Early instead in the poll.

While the primary only immediately affects our readers in California, it's of national significance since three of the participants are prominent Democrats currently serving in the House of Representatives, and two, Schiff and Porter, are extremely influential. Of course, Adam Schiff is the man who so disgraced his position that he was booted from the House Intelligence Committee by Kevin McCarthy and then censured for his "falsehoods, misrepresentations, and abuses of sensitive information.” Katie Porter allegedly has a habit of throwing steaming hot food on her significant other and drives a really nasty minivan, while living in university-subsidized housing as a member of Congress. Let's hope Garvey brings some of this up.
