The assault occurred on Sunday morning.

Police in Washington, D.C. have arrested a man in connection with an antisemitic attack outside a synagogue Sunday morning in the district’s Georgetown neighborhood.

A statement from law enforcement says that Brent Wood, 33, is suspected of having sprayed an unknown substance on two people outside Kesher Israel Congregation, a prominent Modern Orthodox synagogue also known as The Georgetown Synagogue, “while shouting an anti-Semitic phrase.” The phrase, according to local news reports, was, “Gas the Jews.”

The attack came the same weekend as a new spate of bomb threats targeted hundreds of synagogues across the United States, heightening worries for American Jews as the Israel-Hamas war continues to stoke antisemitism globally. In recent weeks there were shots fired at a synagogue and preschool in Albany, New York, and false bomb threats made at synagogues in Orange County, California, among other incidents.

Fortunately, the victims were not injured. The authorities are treating the attack as a hate crime. In a statement released to the press, the Anti-Defamation League said that there is “simply no excuse for these antisemitic attacks.”

This story further highlights growing concerns over increased threats against Jewish communities since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, which began on October 7. The conflict has resulted in the heightened proliferation of antisemitism in America and other western nations.

On college campuses, in particular, anti-Israel activists have taken to staging protests and marches in which participants have called for genocide against the Jewish people and chanted other antisemitic slogans. In major cities across the country, these individuals have held rallies and marches advocating in favor of the Palestinians while also railing against Jews.

In several cases, there have been violent attacks and acts of vandalism targeting Jewish Americans. Last month, a group of pro-Hamas agitators painted graffiti messages on Rep. Dan Goldman’s (D-NY) office. Goldman, who is Jewish, has been a vocal supporter of Israel.

A Jewish New York congressman was targeted by pro-Palestinian vandals who painted graffiti messages on his office. This marks another incident in which anti-Israel activists have used violence and vandalism in support of Hamas.

The incident was reported on Friday.

Rep. Dan Goldman's office in Brooklyn was vandalized overnight.

Workers discovered the vandalism just before 9 a.m. at his office on 9th Street in Park Slope.

Vandals painted "Free Palestine" and "Let Gaza Live," among other messages.

The graffiti has since been cleaned up.

"Our office is accessible 24/7 by appointment, phone, social media, email, or mail, and our incredible constituent services team works around the clock to respond to outreach," communications director Simone Kanter said. "Harassing, intimidating, and outright attacking the staff of a Jewish elected official at a time of rising violence and rampant antisemitism is dangerous and unacceptable."

In Ventura County, California, a pro-Hamas protester killed a Jewish man named Paul Kessler at a pro-Israel rally. The authorities have not ruled out hate crime charges against the suspect. Unfortunately, as the war in Gaza continues, anti-Jewish elements in American society will continue using it to stoke antisemitic sentiment, which will likely lead to even more attacks like this.
