Fox News released a new poll on Friday that seems to have some bad news for President Donald Trump. However, there might be more to these numbers than it appears.

According to the poll, which was conducted between March 21 – 24 revealed that if the presidential election were held today, former Vice President Joe Biden would defeat Trump by nine percentage points. The study analyzed the opinions of 1,011 registered voters and asked: “If the 2020 presidential election were held today, how would you vote if the candidates were [Biden and Trump]?”

The poll revealed that 49% of participants indicated that they would cast their votes for Biden while 40% said they would vote for Trump. Prior Fox News polls got similar results when conducted over the past four months.

It’s also worth noting that Biden’s chances of unseating President Trump increase if one of three former female Democratic candidates are chosen as Biden’s running mate. When Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) or Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) is suggested, the former vice president’s support rise to 50%. When Sen. Elizabeth Warren is the running mate, his support rises to 52%.

Other polls have shown similar results. RealClearPolitics has Biden leading Trump by slightly more than seven percentage points. These findings are in line with the site’s previous polls, which has Biden’s lead ranging from three to 11 percentage points.

The data from these polls do not paint a promising picture for Trump’s prospects for re-election. But there are still a couple of factors to keep in mind.

For starters, it’s still early. While Biden has all but secured the Democratic nomination for president, he has not faced the level of scrutiny that will undoubtedly come when he is chosen to challenge Trump. Moreover, it is likely that his gaffes and questions about his mental acuity will continue to plague his candidacy.

Secondly, this poll was taken before the news broke about Tara Reade, a former Biden staffer who alleged that the former vice president sexually assaulted her in 1993. In lurid detail, she described the encounter to journalist Katie Harper, who released a portion of the interview.

We can be sure that the corporate media will do everything they can to downplay, spin, or suppress the story. Democrats and journalists – but I repeat myself – can be expected to engage in all forms of whataboutism to deflect from the allegations. It also wouldn’t be a shocker if they launched a full-on smear campaign against Biden’s accuser to discredit her statements.

Unfortunately for Biden, there is absolutely no way that his allies in the press will be able to keep this story from harming his candidacy. If Reade is seen as credible, then progressives risk the possibility that they will once again be exposed as hypocrites when they ignore their “believe all women” mantra. Put simply, these numbers could easily change over the next few months. The public will just have to wait and see.
