A number of questions were posed going into the weekend, as there were not too solid expectations for the hold overs, as well as speculation how well the new premiere of an old property could perform. In the end the lineup did rather well with some healthy returns, as well as a few of last week’s Oscar winners receiving a decent boost from their trophy haul.
So far 2019 has been a disappointing market for films, as totals across the board have been down, held back by a number of underperforming titles in February. Next week’s debut of “Captain Marvel” is looked at as invigorating things, if not across all titles then at least boosting the overall totals.
1. HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 3: THE HIDDEN WORLD – $30.04 Million
The title lagged a bit on Friday but the Saturday matinees drew in the kids and it surged nicely. For the second week it dropped -45%, which is a good hold for an animated film. This takes it right on the edge of $100 million in total, and it needed these 2 weeks to gather what it could ahead of the super hero release next week.
2. TYLER PERRY’S A MADEA FAMILY FUNERAL – $27.05m
This is the announced last Madea film to be made, and the swan song did better than expected. Projections had this coming in right around $20 million so this return shows there is still a hunger for Perry’s character. This means there is a likelihood of seeing her return, if not in film then at least in TV or home markets.
3. ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL – $7.0m
The severely underperforming action set piece for Fox has at least seen good news overseas, bailing out the studio. Lagging here stateeside, by not even reaching $75 million after three weeks it has drawn $275 million from foreign territories, and is likely reaching profitability overall.
4. THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART – $6.61m
A very disappointing return compared to expectations, at four weeks it has yet to cross $100 million. There could be long study being made by Warner Brothers to see why this one missed.
5. GREEN BOOK – $4.71m
After winning the Best Picture Academy Award, and other trophies last week, Universal added the film to over 1,300 screens this weekend. This has been a slow but steady performance of drawing $75 million after 16 weeks in theaters.
6. FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY – $4.69m
The wrestling origin story has been an underperformer for MGM. This mainly British production has yet to open in foreign markets, so there could be some residual returns ahead.
7. ISN’T IT ROMANTIC – $4.64m
The Valentines release has largely run its course, dropping over 100 screens after just three weeks.
8. GRETA – $4.58m
The other debut on the list this female-centric thriller really did not appeal to many. Middling reviews and low exit scores from audiences matched up with the Focus Features early test tracking. Initially going to be a staged rollout those indicators meant the studio decided to go with a wide release and hope for a better return.
9. WHAT MEN WANT – $2.7m
The rebooted and gender-swapped comedy has performed relatively well for Paramount, grossing $50 million after one month.
10. HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U – $2.51m
A $25 million run off of a $9 million budget means this has been worthwhile for Universal.
