On Fox News Sunday, Sarah Huckabee Sanders called Democrats’ treatment of Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings — and allegations of sexual misbehavior — “disgraceful” and “disgusting.”
Sanders said the terms of the FBI investigation into Christine Blasey Ford’s claim that Kavanaugh groped her against a bed 36 years ago will be determined by the GOP:
“Senate Republicans are going to lay out and dictate those terms, and we look forward to this wrapping up so we can see what we’ve seen in the last six background investigations that Judge Kavanaugh’s been a part of.”
Sanders excoriated the Democratic Party, pointing out their claims of defiance from the day Trump nominated Kavanaugh:
“From that very first moment, before any of these allegations had even been brought up, Democrats said they were not going to support him, they weren’t going to vote for him, and they were going to do everything within their power to fight him. We’ve seen that play out over the last couple months.”
Furthermore, she insisted both Ford and Kavanaugh have been “exploited” by the party of Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders:
“They’ve been absolutely disgraceful in the way that they’ve handled this process, in the way that they’ve exploited both Brett Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford.”
That exploitation, according to Sarah, has taken a heavy toll on both accuser and accused.
“The biggest thing that I think is so disgraceful and so disgusting is the way that the Democrats have allowed this to play out, and allowed both of these individuals to be so beaten down.”
Sanders said Republicans will limit the scope of the FBI’s probe, impeding a further circus-like trajectory of the hearings..
“I think that we cannot allow the people that’ve acted in bad faith to determine and allow this to become a total fishing expedition by the FBI.”
The fight over the Supreme Court has been a disturbing thing to watch. It reminds me of the chaos of the Watergate hearings, which at one point involved G. Gordon Liddy being asked, “Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?” To which he replied, “No.”
Our nation’s highest court deserves better, because our nation deserves better. But we’re in the thick of it at this point. Here’s hoping there’s a marginal return to sanity in the world of politics sometime soon. But November quickly approaches — so don’t hold your breath.
