President Trump Welcomes Italy's PM Meloni to the White House - and Has Some Remarks About China

On Thursday, President Trump welcomed Il primo ministro italiano Giorgia Meloni (Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni) to the White House. In recent months, Italy has surfaced as one of the United States' best allies in Europe, and PM Meloni, a supporter of President Trump.

The President replied to assembled reporters as PM Meloni exited the automobile:

Reporter: "How confident are you, sir, that you can make a trade deal with the EU?"
President Trump: "Very confident."
Reporter: "With regard to Italy, sir, (inaudible)"
President Trump (Referring, presumably, to PM Meloni) "Great person."

The two national leaders have been known to be on good terms, professionally and personally, for some time.

Later, in the White House, with Prime Minister Meloni seated across the table from President Trump, the president fielded a question about China and another about PM Meloni's leadership of Italy.

REPORTER: This week we saw Chinese President Xi Jinping visit with three of our allies. Should you be worried?@POTUS: "No... nobody can compete with us — nobody." ...

The President said:

(In response to a question regarding China's reaching out to other trade partners): Nobody can compete with us. Nobody.
Reporter: Why not pick up the phone and make a deal (with President Xi):
President Trump: Oh, we're going to make a deal. I think we're going to make a very good deal with China. I think that you will see that we'll make a very good deal with China.

President Trump has always been very good at projecting confidence, even with another national leader in the room, and he did so in this exchange. He would appear to be on solid ground, at least from the trade standpoint; China's economy is heavily dependent on American consumers. Some sort of a deal is inevitable, and President Trump is a deal-maker.

As for the details of that deal, well, that remains to be seen, but it seems unlikely President Trump, having come this far, would agree to anything not to America's advantage.

Later, he praised PM Meloni's leadership:

PM Meloni is the first European leader to meet with President Trump since the Trump tariffs were put in place.

And, frankly, Giorgia Meloni may be the ideal person in this matter. President Trump has expressed admiration for PM Meloni many times; she was the only European leader to attend President Trump's second inauguration. She also appears to be on very good terms with DOGE chief Elon Musk.

Between her good relations with President Trump and her contacts in Europe, Giorgia Meloni may be the perfect person to first strike a trade deal with the United States, and to facilitate the rest of Europe doing likewise.

China, on the other hand, remains uncertain. As of this writing, the president has not made any statement regarding when or how he may speak with Chairman Xi.
