In a twisted case of déjà vu, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced Friday that a Butler, Pennsylvania man has been taken into custody for, amongst other things, threatening to assassinate President Trump and assault other administration officials. Thirty-two-year-old Shawn Monper now faces federal charges of making "threats to assault and murder President Donald J. Trump, other U.S. officials, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents."

Butler was, of course, the site of the July 13, 2024, Trump campaign rally where another would-be assassin shot the president in the ear amidst a series of security failures that led to Kimberly Cheadle's resignation as director of the United States Secret Service.

Monper, who went by the name "Mr Satan" on YouTube, came to the attention of the FBI National Threat Operations Section (NTOS) this past Tuesday due to threats he had made against President Trump on the video platform; the threats apparently began shortly before Inauguration Day, with the most recent one having been posted on April 5. The speedy NTOS investigation tied the internet activity of "Mr Satan" to Monper's residence, and he was taken into custody on Wednesday.

Concerningly, the investigation also uncovered that Monper had obtained a firearms permit shortly before the inauguration, and used his "Mr Satan" account to brag about stockpiling guns, body armor and ammunition in preparation for carrying out a "mass shooting."

The federal complaint against Monper details other threats, including some made against Elon Musk and ICE agents:

February 17, 2025: “Nah, we just need to start killing people, Trump, Elon, all the heads of agencies Trump appointed, and anyone who stands in the way. Remember, we are the majority, MAGA is a minority of the country, and by the time its time to make the move, they will be weakened, many will be crushed by these policies, and they will want revenge too. American Revolution 2.0”

March 4, 2025: “im going to assassinate him myself.” This threat was made in a YouTube video titled “Live: Trump’s address to Congress.”

March 18, 2025: “ICE are terrorist people, we need to start killing them.”

April 1, 2025: “If I see an armed ice agent, I will consider it a domestic terrorist, and an active shooter and open fire on them.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi, along with Acting U.S. Attorney Troy Rivetti for the Western District of Pennsylvania, made the announcement of Monper's arrest, noting they will be seeking the "maximum appropriate punishment."

"I want to applaud the outstanding and courageous investigative work of the FBI and the Butler Township Police Department, who thankfully identified and apprehended this individual before he could carry out his threats against President Trump’s life and the lives of other innocent Americans. Rest assured that whenever and wherever threats of assassination or mass violence occur, this Department of Justice will find, arrest, and prosecute the suspect to the fullest extent of the law and seek the maximum appropriate punishment."

The Butler Township Police Department assisted the FBI in apprehending Monper on April 9; he is expected to appear at a detention hearing on April 14 at 1:00 p.m. Eastern time. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brendan J. McKenna will be prosecuting the case.
