Veteran Democrat operative James Carville, once respected as the "Ragin' Cajun" who engineered Bill Clinton's successful 1992 presidential run, has reduced himself to a sniveling, ever-bitter, TDS-riddled fool.
Whether Carville is busy torching Trump or blasting his fellow Democrat comrades for doing this or that wrong, the Louisianan is clearly not a happy camper — which makes his epic rants even more fun to behold.
In a guest essay for The New York Times published on Monday, Carville did his delusional best to trash Trump's "economic chaos," and scheme for all to see how he believes Democrats can turn the economic tables against America's 47th president.
In Carville's alternate world, Trump violated the “cardinal rule” of American politics by supposedly “destabilizing the economy” with his sweeping tariff policies:
In what will certainly be recorded as one of the most ignorant acts of political leadership in American history, the president of the United States has now willfully damaged the global economy with his tariff chaos. Not only was this an act of economic warfare, it has broken the cardinal rule in American politics: Never destabilize the economy. With it, the Trump administration is causing enormous damage to itself — and there can be no more distraction from this naked truth.
Please.
While Trump's tariff policies and his reactions to responses of other countries might not be perfect — nothing is — the fact remains that he's the first president of the United States to attempt to reset the world's trade imbalance. And what would the Democrat Party do about foreign countries continuing to rip off the U.S. with lopsided trade policies? Zero — which is exactly what they have done for decades.

Anyway, Carville believes Trump's pretend "screw-up" presents a gold opportunity for the flailing Democrat Party, which still hasn't come to grips, much less understood, why Trump and down-ballot Republicans thoroughly and decisively thrashed them in the 2024 general election.
Here's James again:
This is where the Democrats have an opening. In February I wrote a piece calling on my party’s leaders to play dead, allowing the Republicans to punch themselves out and crumble beneath their own weight.
But many Democrats indulged Mr. Trump’s lunacy or allowed themselves to become the story over the government funding and shutdown debate, while the president continued his campaign of chaos and distraction.
Now, Democrats have an opportunity to allow the Republicans to edge closer to collapse as the party in full control of Washington — let’s please not become the story again and get in their way.
With due respect, Mr. Carville —which is close to zero — your party has "become the story" over and over as it has continued its regular histrionic meltdowns over everything Trump says and does, even as his approval rating remains strong.
And do you know why Trump's approval remains strong, James?
Because this president continues follow through on the promises he made throughout the presidential campaign, beginning with ending the never-ending surge of illegal aliens into this country — a surge that was intentionally caused by Joe Biden and Congressional Democrats — and continuing with his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) uncovering billions of dollar of government waste, fraud, and inefficiencies.
Tack on having the courage to say "enough is enough" about unfair trade practices, and you might begin to understand— wait, you and your Democrat colleagues will never understand, which is a glorious thing for the rational among us to continue to watch.
My favorite part of Carville's ridiculous missive was blathering on about Trump's "problem" being "that smoke and mirrors only work until you screw up so hard that no act of lunacy can pull the American people’s attention elsewhere.” Again, Mr. Carville, two words: Joe Biden.
While I'm neither a fan of "whataboutism" nor deflection, it was Carville himself advising Democrats in 2024 not to “tell people how great this economy is” because the four miserable years under Biden's failed "Bidenomics" were marked by high gas prices, ever-rising prices at the grocery store, and millions of illegal aliens waltzing into the country virtually unchecked — untold numbers of whom took menial jobs away from American workers.
Nevertheless, here's how Carville believes the Democrats can turn the tables on Trump's economy:
First, focus on prices. We must start with what matters most. President Trump won the White House on an overt promise to bring down prices. Let’s not forget his most oft-repeated claims: “Starting on Day 1, we will end inflation and make America affordable again, to bring down the prices of all goods” or: “Prices will come down. You just watch. They’ll come down, and they’ll come down fast, not only with insurance, with everything.”
No human being could undo the damage done to America and its economy during four years of Biden-Harris in one day, a week, or one month — and Carville knows it.
Second, it’s not about the stock market, it’s about 401(k)s. With six in 10 Americans lacking the savings to cover even a $1,000 emergency expense, Democrats cannot afford to hinge our economic narrative on the rise and fall of a market for the privileged. For younger Americans, stocks will most likely rebound and grow over time. But the tariffs are a poison dagger for those who have saved and vested into their 401(k) their entire lives, just to see it depleted by the reckless actions of the president.
Far be it from me to agree with anything that comes out of Carville's mouth, but he was partially right — particularly with respect to Americans in or approaching retirement whose 401(k)s include equity (stock) investments. As I've written elsewhere, the simplistic response of keyboard jockeys on our side who brush off substantial market declines with "It's a good time to buy" doesn't get it done for these people.
And third, make the message local. It’s important that as a party we understand this is not about us and that the Democratic brand is tarnished at this given moment. And instead, take our prints off of the message as much as possible. This is not about us going on CNN or taking to X to complain about the president.
Ahh, Mr. Carville, but rushing to a camera on CNN or MSNBC is what you do — that is, with your bitter podcasts and such. Moreover, the Democrat Party of old is no more; that ship sailed years ago.
Untold numbers of hard-working Democrat voters, including record numbers of Black and Hispanic voters, crossed party lines and supported Trump in the election.
And given Trump's accomplishments have occurred in less than 100 days, I suspect more and more Democrats are going to continue to abandon your sinking Democrat ship — especially if Trump continues to win.
