Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has had it with the political posturing being done by RINOs in the state legislature who are looking to consolidate their own power by stripping the governor of his when it comes to immigration enforcement. On the surface, this may look like politics as usual, but, as ever, Donald Trump looms large over the entire thing.
As RedState reported last month, some of the squishier Republicans in the Florida state legislature decided to wage war with DeSantis after he called a special session to prime the Sunshine State to enact the Trump administration's ambitious immigration agenda.
Predictably, Democrats in Florida pushed back on DeSantis, with one, Orlando State Sen. Carlos Guillermo Smith, saying, “This is about the Governor drawing attention to himself after the inauguration for political purposes."
Another Democrat, Orlando State Rep. Anna Eskamani, decried the governor wanting to move fast on the issue of illegal immigration reform, complaining, “This is a waste of taxpayer money. It is another attempt by Governor DeSantis to make a political spectacle on the goal of dividing us instead of bringing us together."
Somewhat less predictably, Senate President Ben Albritton and House Speaker Daniel Perez, both of whom are Republicans, also balked at convening on January 27 to proceed with immigration reform, stating they would decide "when and what legislation we consider."
The real fireworks began on January 27, when Perez gaveled in the special session called by the governor, immediately gaveled it out, and then called his own special session. That's some serious middle-school theatrics right there.
Ron DeSantis: Florida Pitching in to Help With Illegal Immigration
But things only got worse as the RINO wing of the legislature banded together to propose something they called the TRUMP Act, which stands for Tackling and Reforming Unlawful Migration Policy. This legislation would strip the governor's office of the authority to oversee immigration-related law enforcement efforts in the state and hand them, instead, to the state secretary of Agriculture.
The tug-of-war has been going on for weeks, and DeSantis has very obviously tired of it. On Friday, the governor announced that he had entered into an agreement with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS)—now headed by DeSantis's old congressional colleague, Kristi Noem—that will allow the Florida Highway Patrol to detain illegals.
President Trump is committed to effectuating the largest deportation effort in U.S. history. To help fulfill this mission, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has offered an agreement with the Florida Highway Patrol to be trained & authorized by ICE to carry out immigration enforcement actions here in our state.
Thanks to strong leadership from the Trump Administration, state law enforcement will now be able to execute ICE’s 287(g) program to deport illegal aliens without unnecessary delays.
Florida law enforcement officers are already doing great work, and we look forward to unleashing even more resources to capture and deport the illegal aliens who were invited into our country by the Biden Administration. These next four years must be when we end the illegal immigration crisis once and for all.
In announcing the agreement with DHS, DeSantis made it clear he was 100 percent on board with President Trump's repatriation goals, saying the president was swept into office "with a head of steam" to end the illegal immigration crisis. Floridians seem pleased with the development.
