When you cover the antics of GOP politicians long enough you find yourself writing the same stories over and over. The most common theme I’ve run into over the years dealing with Republican politicians is that they are addicted to one thing: losing.
The whole skit is funny…something SNL has been incapable of for about a decade…but the key part for this post starts at 0:53 and only runs about five seconds.
I’m sorry, do you want to lose? I throw, you catch. It’s not that hard.
Right now, there is a total sh**show taking place in Georgia. The Republican governor has called on the Republican secretary of state to resign. The secretary of state appears to be incapable of organizing a two-car funeral much less a presidential election. In fact, he seems to be much more concerned about getting favorable editorials and mentions in left-wing newspapers and cable shows than he is in ensuring the integrity of the election system he oversees. There seems to be no curiosity on the part of anyone about the mystery dumps of ballots that all go one way. Republicans have been breaking their own necks claiming video evidence of very bizarre behavior is “debunked.”
As if this stunning display of incompetence was not enough, the system is going to be stressed again in January as the state carries out two additional elections. Republican incumbent David Perdue is in a runoff against socialist Jon Ossoff having failed to win 50% of the vote on November 3. Republican incumbent Kelly Loeffler is facing off Reverend Jeremiah Wright acolyte Reverend Raphael Warnock to fill the remainder of Johnny Isakson’s term. This is a significant election no matter who becomes president. I would argue that it is vital to the survival of anything that looks like conservatism should Joe Biden be declared the winner of the presidential election. Losing one seat gives Mitch McConnell an unmanageable majority of one seat. Lose both and Chuck Schumer is Senate Majority Leader.
Given the stakes one would think that both Perdue and Loeffler would recognize a couple of things. First off, a crap ton of Republicans don’t really care a whole lot about David Perdue or Kelly Loeffler. Second, a crap ton of Republicans and conservatives do care about the apparent theft of the Georgia election through illegality, incompetence, and collusion between what should be a GOP administration in Georgia and local Democrat machines to ensure that no one can ever really know how many legal votes were cast and how many illegal votes were counted. Given that as a backdrop, neither Perdue nor Loeffler are required to believe that President Trump won or lost Georgia. What they are required to do is support the effort to make every legal vote count. –
One would think. But then, one would be very, very wrong.
One Wednesday, Perdue spoke to the Republican Jewish Coalition remotely. The meeting was recorded and leaked to the Washington Post and the leaked video generated this story: David Perdue appears to tacitly acknowledge Biden’s victory in video call with Republican group
Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.) appeared to tacitly acknowledge President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in a video recording obtained by The Washington Post on Thursday, speaking just days before President Trump plans to travel to Georgia to campaign for Perdue and fellow senator Kelly Loeffler.
Neither Loeffler (R-Ga.) nor Perdue has acknowledged Biden’s victory in public, and both have supported the president’s unfounded claims that fraud tainted the election.
But in a video meeting recorded Wednesday with members of the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC), Perdue spoke pragmatically about the role a GOP-controlled Senate could play as a check on the Biden administration. He did not discuss Trump’s efforts to overturn the election.
“We know what this change of command at the top will mean with our foreign relations,” Perdue said in the video, adding: “If we can keep the majority in the Senate, we can at least be a buffer on some of the things that the Biden camp has been talking about in terms of their foreign policy.”
…
“We have an opportunity to do something that maybe we lost in the last administration between [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi and Trump,” Perdue said. “That was just a bridge too far to think that we were going to get them to negotiate. But here we have Biden and McConnell, who are ex-colleagues in the Senate, who are known negotiators, who, if Biden can get away from this extreme part of his party, he might make some deals.”
Perdue used a more hypothetical tone at another point on the video, saying that the Senate could be in a position for such deals “if they end up being in power,” referring to the Democrats in the White House.
What is striking is not so much the words as the tone. Perdue seems to be pining the for the good old days when a thoroughly stump-broke GOP senate majority allowed to have train after train run on it by Obama, Schumer, and Pelosi. Mitch McConnell only became “Cocaine Mitch” once he had a strong and steady hand in White House. Otherwise, he is all too ready to ingratiate himself in the most bipartisan way to whatever the Democrats want.
Even if President Trump’s efforts to have an open and transparent election fail, Perdue should not be focusing on all the sweet deals that McConnell can cut with Biden…none of which are going to work to the benefit of a single conservative, a single tax-payer, or a single person of faith anywhere in this country. Even were Cocaine Mitch still on the prowl and looking to stymie a putative President Biden, if both Georgia Senate seats remain in GOP hands that gives him a two-seat majority. Subtract from that Mittens, who might as well be a Democrat, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and heaven knows what weak trash is going to crawl out of the woodwork to curry favor with a Democrat administration.
For Perdue to be talking anything other than election integrity and supporting any and all efforts to ensure that all legal votes count, much less rhapsodizing about the deal making that a Biden administration will usher in, to a group headed by a King RINO himself that virtually guaranteed that the whole meeting would leak, was little short of insane.
If Perdue were telling Trump voters to FOAD and peeing on a MAGA hat, he could have hardly been more direct about it. When you have insane people out there demanding Trump supporters not turn out to vote in January, the last thing that a rational candidate should do is give them every reason to do just that.
I really hope Perdue and Loeffler pull this off. I don’t want Chuck Schumer running the Senate because I know what he will do is infinitely worse than whatever McConnell does or fails to do. But crap like this, when you get the feeling that the sole interest of a lot of our Senators is to get back to business as usual and protect the Swamp and its denizens, makes you wonder why you even bother to concern yourself with politics.
