After the shellacking that Bernie Sanders took last night, there was a lot of anticipation in the air when Bernie Sanders, who did not make a speech last night, announced that he would make a statement at 1 p.m. today. Across Biden-land and the media, to the extent these aren’t the same thing, Sanders supporters were assured that they would be welcome in the coalition that Joe Biden is assembling when not heavily engaged in sundowning.

Alas, it was not to be.

Sanders is in this until the last dog is dead.

This is not entirely a shock. Sanders has been an Independent who has merely caucused with Democrats while in the Senate. He has no loyalty to the Democrat party or its leadership, indeed, even last night he was running against them, making vague accusations of voter suppression. His loyalty is to the movement he has given voice to. True to his Bolshevik roots, he knows that a bloody and ill-fated resistance is better than compromise.

In a very short period of time, the air is going to go out of this particular balloon. As losses mount, funding is going to dry up. We do, however have two things to look forward to. On Sunday there will be an epic two-man debate in which Sanders, for moral and political reasons, must go after Biden hammer-and-tongs. And we can thank Bernie for leaving behind a smoking crater where the Democrat party was trying to build unity of purpose.
