Good morning, and welcome to RedState's "Morning Minute" — a brief glimpse at which stories are trending at the moment and a look ahead at what the day may bring. Consider this your one-stop shop for news to kickstart your day.
TOP O' THE MORNIN'
One would think with trust in the media being at all-time lows that they'd want to avoid making those numbers get even lower. But TDS/VDS does strange things to people, and journalists are certainly no exception to that rule.
I don’t know, but RFK Jr. and Trump seem to have forged an unlikely bond.
Pro-Life Laws Didn't Kill Amber Thurman, the Abortion Industry Did
The callous disregard for life shown by the abortion industry and its cheerleaders in the Democrat Party is something all voters should remember when they go to the ballot box on November 5th.
WHAT'S ON TAP?
Today on Capitol Hill...
It's a fairly busy day on the Hill Wednesday, with multiple hearings/meetings set, including:
- House Homeland Security — “A Country Without Borders: How the Biden-Harris Open Borders Policies Have Undermined Our Safety and Security”
- House Judiciary, Crime and Federal Government Surveillance Subcommittee — Oversight of Homeland Security Investigations
- House Financial Services, Digital Assets, Financial Technology and Inclusion Subcommittee — Dazed and Confused: Breaking Down the SEC’s Politicized Approach to Digital Assets
- House Education and the Workforce, Workforce Protections Subcommittee — "Examining the Biden-Harris Attacks on Tipped Workers"
- Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation — Hearings to examine aviation cybersecurity threats
- House Financial Services, National Security, Illicit Finance, and International Financial Institutions Subcommittee — Protecting Americans’ Savings: Examining the Economics of the Multi-Billion Dollar Romance Confidence Scam Industry [Wut?]
- House Ways and Means, Health Subcommittee — Investing in a Healthier America: Chronic Disease Prevention and Treatment
- Joint Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (U.S. Helsinki Commission) — Hearings to examine Russia's imperial identity
- Senate Intelligence (Select) — Hearings to examine foreign threats to elections in 2024, focusing on roles and responsibilities of U.S. tech providers
There will undoubtedly be a lot of news coming out of the House as Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) tees up the spending bill (plus SAVE Act) for a vote on Wednesday. This could get ugly. (And if it does, will undoubtedly work against the Republicans, politically — because that's just how it works.)
Also, it's not Capitol Hill, but the Fed is expected to make its announcement on interest rates Wednesday.
White House What's Up
Nothing on President Joe Biden's schedule during the day aside from his Daily Brief. Late afternoon/early evening, he's hosting a reception to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
The Homestretch
Vice President Kamala Harris will deliver remarks at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute's 47th Annual Leadership Conference Wednesday afternoon, followed by a virtual campaign event. Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff is attending campaign events in New York.
Former President Donald Trump will hold a rally in Uniondale, New York, on Wednesday evening. His running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, will be in Raleigh, North Carolina, for a rally on Wednesday.
Also, the Teamsters executive board is set to meet Wednesday to consider a Harris or Trump endorsement.
Full Court Press...
Trump will not be sentenced today in the Manhattan criminal case. Sentencing in the matter was, as readers may recall, delayed until November.
Meanwhile, Hunter Biden has asked the Delaware federal court to delay his sentencing in the firearms case from November 13 to later in November or December due to scheduling conflicts with the California tax case and a civil case.
Sean "Diddy" Combs plans to appeal his denial of bail on Wednesday. (Combs was denied bail at his initial appearance before a magistrate judge Tuesday afternoon as he was deemed a flight risk. He'll have a bail hearing Wednesday afternoon before U.S. District Court Judge Andrew Carter.)
Of Primary Concern
It's not a primary, but New Jersey is holding a special election on Wednesday to replace Rep. David Payne Jr., who died in April. This is a safe D district, so expect Democrat LaMonica McIver to score the win to serve out the remainder of Payne's term.
MORNING MUSING
Different franchise, but the meme below reminded me of a key scene from another space-related classic:
We are 48 days away from the election — less if you're an early voter. There is going to be all manner of stuff hurled at us over the next seven weeks. If you think it's been a wild ride up 'til now, buckle up, my friends. Don't get distracted, don't get demoralized. Stay focused, stay on target. Vote.
LIGHTER FARE
Logical.
