I have an old lady confession to make: I don’t use TikTok. I don’t really use Snapchat either – it’s just not instinctive for me. TikTok’s instinctive but I had reservations about the app early on that appear to be well-founded. Not that I’ve never seen a TikTok video – of course I have. But I don’t have the app on my phone and I don’t want it there, particularly not given its connection to the CCP and the degree to which it appears to data mine.

And I say that while realizing that’s all most social media platforms and apps do, in one way or another. The reason they’re “free” is because by using them, we’re providing them with valuable information that can be converted into revenue. I do realize that very little we do these days – certainly in the online or digital realm — isn’t spied upon in one way or another.

But there’s a push in the halls of government to boot the popular app – not just off government devices (which makes absolute sense, in my opinion) but from use in the U.S. altogether. Senator Josh Hawley has called for such a ban, though his most recent effort was blocked by fellow Republican Rand Paul over constitutional concerns. I guess I can see both sides of that argument, but I think, for now, I come down on the side of Senator Paul.
