'Big Wake Up Call': CNN's Harry Enten Reveals Why 'Sirens Should Be Going Off' for Chuck Schumer

While it's not breaking news that Democrats are in full-blown disarray, it's nevertheless amusing to report on the latest goings on with the internal (and external) fighting among DNCers, the battle among House and Senate members on who will emerge as the face of the party, and the debate over which Democrat should be leading the Senate in the Trump 47 era.

The latter, of course, is happening because a growing number of Democrats in Congress and beyond are unhappy with Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who earned their ire when he caved to Republicans and President Trump on the CR back in March. Though he has taken a lot of heat over it, he maintains that he chose the better of two options that were both bad in his view.

Schumer also did himself no favors among voters by sneering about business owners who want to keep the money they worked hard to earn instead of forking over increasing amounts to Uncle Sam. He stated in a mid-March "View" interview that, "You know what their attitude is, 'I made my money all by myself. How dare your government take my money from me?' I don't want to pay taxes."

Since that time, things have only gotten worse for Schumer. So bad, in fact, that his favorability numbers among Democrats have dropped dramatically in just a few months' time. That and overall Democrat voter dissatisfaction with the party "screams sirens should be going off, primary challenge, primary challenge," observed CNN data guru Harry Enten, who indicated Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) could be the beneficiary of such talk:

ENTEN: New York Democrats on Chuck Schumer view him favorably in December of 2024. That was just a few months ago. It was 73 percent. Look at where that number has fallen to in just a few months. It is now down to just 52 percent. That is the lowest I could ever find in Siena College on how Democrats in Chuck Schumer's home state view him.

And keep in mind, if you're thinking about a primary challenge, it would be a few years away, but Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's favorable rating among Democrats is considerably higher, in the 60s. So, he is doing quite poorly in his own home state of New York. I never thought I'd see the day in which just 52 percent of New York Democrats would view Chuck Schumer favorably. It's almost unfathomable.

[...]

ENTEN: Yes, it's because they, simply put, don't like the job he's doing as Senate leader. I mean, look at this. Should Schumer stay as Senate leader? Again, according to New York Democrats, just 50 percent say yes. Look at this number, 48 percent say no. This screams sirens should be going off, primary challenge, primary challenge, primary challenge. When you are a Democrat in New York and these are your ratings, this is a big wakeup call if you're Chuck Schumer, John Berman.

Watch:

As we've reported, AOC has been on a cross-country tour with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), taking expensive private jets while complaining about "the rich," repeating Orange Man Bad messages, and trying to reassure people that Democrats are going to work hard to earn back the working-class voters who have abandoned them.

While she's remained mum on a challenge to Schumer - or a possible 2028 presidential run - she's not tamping down on the talk, either, which suggests she's keeping her options open.

My thought bubble is that she'll challenge Schumer in 2026 rather than run for president. She knows the lay of the land better in the Empire State, would be on more friendly ground, and has the knowledge in mind that she once defied the odds against another powerful Democrat leader, and maybe wants to go for the bigger fish this time around.

Whatever the case may be, I'd suggest stocking up on the popcorn and chicken wings because, just as the Nadler-Maloney 2022 primary battle was, it's going to continue to be fun to watch all of this play out.
