That Democrats including President Joe Biden, First Lady Jill Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are notorious for flouting the mask rules they demand others abide by to the point people get fined/shutdown/arrested if they don’t comply is not exactly new or shocking news. But some incidents are just so brazen that they are worth documenting not just for the record, but also so those same Democrats can be served up a heaping dose of humble pie.
Such was the case for Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) during a recent visit to a New York restaurant. Thanks to Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul, mask mandates are in place throughout the state, and in addition to maskless patrons, businesses can also be fined if they don’t enforce the rules Hochul put in place last month.
Gillibrand, however, apparently felt like some of her fellow New York Dems in thinking that maybe she was above the rules when she went to the Innovo Kitchen in Latham, NY on Friday maskless, despite the sign on the door notifying customers of the state’s mask requirement regardless of vaccination status. The restaurant’s owner and chef John LaPosta was furious when he found out about it, for reasons he explained in an interview:
“I’m in my office, and all of a sudden my manager comes back frantic,” LaPosta said. “We have a very, very strict policy on masks. We are following the (state) mandate. … The manager said (Gillibrand) blew past her and (she) didn’t even have a moment to ask her to put her mask on. … It’s not cool. I’m angry for my staff, who are in masks eight or nine hours a day. … She’s part of the system that puts the rules in place. Do you not lead by example? It infuriates me.”
LaPosta was so angered by the incident that he put her on blast, posting a video clip to Instagram of Gillibrand walking into his establishment as though she was in a rush and couldn’t be bothered:
NEW: More hypocrisy. New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand thinks she’s too good for New York’s mask mandate and gets called out by the restaurant! Video and more here: pic.twitter.com/OFmUMRDP2E

Here’s how LaPosta captioned the video:
“The problem with NY politics in a nut shell. My Senator blowing past my manager before she can even ask her to put a mask on. Walking right past a really big sign that says “masks required to enter” The masks are a mandate from the Governor. As good citizens, agree or not, we must follow our leaders. Her guest is graciously wearing one. I guess Senator Gillibrand thinks that the Governor is wrong or she is special and above the rules.”
Though she’s posted nothing on her Twitter feed about this incident, Gillibrand issued a statement the next day saying that “We all need to do our part to help stop the spread of Omicron and that means following state and local guidance. That includes me and I will do better going forward.”
The only way these people learn – or at least pretend they learn – is by the others doing the same type of mask shaming these people would do if the shoe was on the other foot. Good on LaPosta for holding Gillibrand’s feet to the fire on this one. Something tells me it’ll be the last time she does something like this – at least in New York state, anyway. Because in New York, the people don’t play.
