Regarding the Jussie Smollett case and Democrats revisiting their original statements, I didn’t think it could get any worse between Sen. Cory Booker’s (NJ) attempts at deflection and Sen. Kamala Harris’s (CA) feigned ignorance on her original tweet.

But it actually did.

When news reports first broke on the allegations the “Empire” actor made about a “hate crime” against him in the early morning hours of Jan. 29th, here’s what Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (NY) had to say:

This is a sickening and outrageous attack, and horribly, it’s the latest of too many hate crimes against LGBTQ people and people of color. We are all responsible for condemning this behavior and every person who enables or normalizes it. Praying for Jussie and his family.

Fast forward to what we know now about the fact the Chicago PD believe Smollett staged a hate crime hoax, and here’s what Gillibrand, a 2020 hopeful, said to CNN‘s DJ Judd about it on Tuesday:

“I still don’t know the facts of what happened and so I will wait to find out the facts of what happened and so I will wait to find out the facts before I make another statement.

I think my statement was much more about that racism and homophobia in any form, any bigoted act or words are heinous and something we don’t support, but we don’t know the facts, so I’m going to wait and find out the facts.”

It’s true Smollett hadn’t yet been charged and arrested at the time she made these comments. But we learned a lot more this week about what police are saying really happened in this case than we did when the stories broke in late January when she and so many others rushed to judgment.

Gillibrand’s statement is a joke, but one that’s not funny. Even though they’re being asked about it by journalists, none of the presidential contenders so far have come remotely close to doing what they should do in response to the new news about Smollett: Apologize.

And of course they won’t be pressed on issuing an apology by our esteemed betters in the MSM.

I think the only person whose “amended” statement could possibly be worse than this one is NY Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez’s – whenever she gets around to making one, that is.

As for me? I’m just trying to get some ranch dressing.
