On Firing Woke Commanders

Three times wasn't the charm. Maybe the fourth time will be.

Col. Susan Meyers, commander of the 821st Space Base Group, was shown the door Thursday, and occupied the unemployment line with her fellow travelers. Vice Adm. Shoshanna Chatfield,  Gen. Charles "CQ" Brown , and  Adm. Lisa M. Franchetti  were all canned for their failure to lead their charges and failure to follow the president's directives. And I guess there were a few others who were less publicized. But perhaps from somewhere up above, Douglas MacArthur is shaking his head slowly and thinking "Didn't you guys learn anything?" Or maybe he's using telepathy to send over the name of his publisher. Don't know. Anyway...

The latest firing of Meyers was thoroughly covered here at RedState, so I just wanted to comment on the rash of them lately. It seems that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is turning out to be a Medusa with many heads. And it's been slithering around out there since 2008 when Obama became president. That means the beast hatched out of the egg almost 20 years ago and spawned--and it didn't stop spawning.

In this latest episode, Meyers thought to speak for the entire base by saying, "I do not presume to understand current politics, but what I do know is the concerns of the U.S. administration discussed by Vice President Vance on Friday are not reflective of Pituffik Space Base,"  Effectively saying, Sorry, Not Sorry. And then capping it off with, "I commit that, for as long as I am lucky enough to lead this base, all of our flags will fly proudly -- together."

Kumbaya.

Now, it seems to me that her luck just ran out, but also that luck should have nothing to do with the position that she held. Commanders can be commanders for a lot of reasons. Nepotism, favoritism, influence, money, etc., etc.  But I think we can all agree that the one reason they should be placed in charge is merit. Anything else might get people killed. I admit that I do not know why Meyers was promoted to Commander of the 821st Space Group, but I suspect that it was politics. The same politics that Meyers claims to know nothing about. And when a commander sticks her neck out as she did, there is a problem. Not just that under this new CNC it might get chopped off, but also the precedent she set.

There might be Guardians (or sailors, or soldiers or airmen, or Marines, or Coastguardsmen), who just might follow her lead. And maybe, not in the way she had hoped.

Say, if the Boss was defiant of her Boss, maybe I can be defiant of my Boss. I just have to remember to claim moral high ground and I can do whatever I want, too!

From a civilian's standpoint, I think I understand the importance of following policy in the military. I get it that cohesion gets the mission accomplished. Whatever that mission might be. And it's the responsibility of a commander to keep their personal feelings to themselves (not broadcast it to the planet), and do what they're clearly expected to do. If your own ethics or morals will not permit you to do that in good conscience, then you resign. That would be, in my opinion, the right and honorable thing to do.

What this lady did, however, was bring Jerry Springer into the room with a bouquet of flowers, hoping that a soft-peddle would take the edge off of her insubordination. It didn't work. So, this recent firing will probably do one of two things. It will either pull the rest of the DEIs in line, or it will drive them deeper where they can maliciously comply until they get caught. I don't know. I hope they snap to and get on board, but these kinds of people are radical; so, I just hope for the best.

Either way, if she doesn't get dishonorably discharged, then maybe...

[Editor's Note: Many readers will recognize the photo, but just in case some don't get the reference--it's from the ending of the movie "Stripes," where John Larroquette's character, the commander of the unit that Bill Murray's character is in, gets fired by being shipped off to Alaska.]
