Officials with the Las Vegas Police Department have announced that they have made a arrest in connection with the 1997 murder of the late rapper Tupac Shakur.
Shakur was killed in a drive-by shooting on the Las Vegas strip on September 7th 1997, as he and his manager at the time, Marion Hugh "Shug" Knight, were driving in a large convoy of 10 vehicles near the Las Vegas Strip. A lone vehicle pulled up to his vehicle at a red light and opened fire. Shakur was shot multiple times and died from his wounds days later; the case has been unsolved ever since.
Duane "Keffe D" Davis was arrested early Friday morning, although the exact charge or charges were not immediately clear, according to two officials with first-hand knowledge of the arrest. They were not authorized to speak publicly ahead of an expected indictment later Friday.
Davis has long been known to investigators and has himself admitted in interviews and in his 2019 tell-all memoir, "Compton Street Legend," that he was in the Cadillac where the gunfire erupted during the September 1996 drive-by shooting. Shakur was 25 when he was gunned down.
Shakur's murder has been swarmed by controversies and conspiracy theories ever since the incident occured. Fingers have been pointed at several different figures, including "Shug" Knight, who had signed Shakur on his label, Death Row Records. Others have said that Shakur was still alive but in hiding, or that that the LAPD had him murdered.
Davis' arrest comes almost exactly two months after Las Vegas Police executed a search warrant of his house, which was also in connection with the murder case.
Police reported collecting multiple computers, a cellphone and hard drive, a Vibe magazine that featured Shakur, several .40-caliber bullets, two "tubs containing photographs" and a copy of Davis' 2019 tell-all memoir, "Compton Street Legend."
In the book, Davis said he broke his silence over Tupac's killing in 2010 during a closed-door meeting with federal and local authorities. At the time, he was 46 and facing life in prison on drug charges when he agreed to speak with the authorities.
"They promised they would shred the indictment and stop the grand jury if I helped them out," he wrote.
He has described himself as one of the last living witnesses to the shooting.
Davis has long been suspected of killing Shakur by both law enforcement and people connected with Shakur and Knight. Shakur, along with other rappers with Death Row Records, had been feuding with another rapper, "Biggie Smalls," AKA Notorious B.I.G., as the the West Coast/East Coast rapper/gang rivalries were at their zenith in the 90s. The LAPD, along with Las Vegas Police, have each suspect Davis and several others as both suspects and accessories; however, over the past 20 years, most of them have died from various causes except for Davis. He is the only surviving link in that case and is now viewed by most law enforcement experts as the prime suspect.
The arresting charges are unknown at this time, as an indictment has yet to be handed down. Details will updated as new information comes in.
