Several GOP Members Urge Pelosi to Visit Taiwan, While Biden Tries to Convince Her Not to Go

Several GOP members, including Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, are trying to convince House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to make the trip to Taiwan.

As I reported last week, President Joe Biden told reporters that the military does not think the trip to Taiwan is a good idea, as China might retaliate against Taiwan due to the House Speaker’s visit.

“The military thinks it’s not a good idea right now … but I don’t know what the status of it is.”

Pelosi responded to Biden’s warning, saying:

“You never even hear me say if I’m going to London, because it is a security issue,” she said — while suggesting the Pentagon’s concern is that Beijing would attack her plane, rather than allow it to land in Taipei.

“I think what the president was saying is that maybe the military was afraid that our plane would get shot down, or something like that, by the Chinese ,,, I don’t know exactly. I didn’t see it. I didn’t hear it.”

Now, several GOP members are trying to convince the House Speaker to make the trip to Taiwan, as Pompeo offered to make the trip with Pelosi. Pompeo tweeted:

“.@SpeakerPelosi. Nancy, I’ll go with you. I’m banned in China, but not freedom-loving Taiwan. See you there!”

On Monday, Senator Sasse said:

“Speaker Pelosi should go to Taiwan and President Biden should make it abundantly clear to Chairman Xi that there’s not a damn thing the Chinese Communist Party can do about it … No more feebleness and self-deterrence.”

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (R-GA) encouraged Pelosi to visit Taiwan, tweeting:

“What is the Pentagon thinking when it publicly warns against Speaker Pelosi going to Taiwan? If we are so intimidated by the Chinese Communists we can’t even protect an American Speaker of the House why should Beijing believe we can help Taiwan survive. Timidity is dangerous.”

On Monday, the White House declined to take a stance on Pelosi’s potential trip to Taiwan, as White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said:

“The administration routinely provides members of Congress with information and context for potential travel, including geopolitical and security considerations … Members of Congress will make their own decisions.”

It’s worth noting that Pelosi has not confirmed the trip publicly, as Biden fears China beginning a war with Taiwan. The GOP wants to stand firm against China while showing support for Taiwan.

If the Speaker of the House accepts the former Secretary of State’s offer, it will be nice to see Pompeo and Pelosi head to Taiwan and show true unity while representing the United States of America.
