In a recent appearance on “The View,” rapper and activist Killer Mike engaged in a heated exchange with co-host Sunny Hostin over his praise of Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and refusal to endorse President Joe Biden.

The back-and-forth happened on Monday’s broadcast and spotlighted the rapper’s political stances, particularly his emphasis on local politics. When asked about his hesitancy to support Biden, he discussed how America tends to fixate on national politics instead of paying attention to what is happening in their own communities.

"We get caught up in the soap opera of federal elections and that's fine, but if you are concerned with the federal election, and you don't know your city council, your wardsman, you don't know who your mayor is, and you don't have a good list of state representatives or governor, then you're just a part of whoever wins the Super Bowl, the fanfare.”

He continued, explaining that he does not “want to be involved in the soap opera because I’m worried about what’s going on in Atlanta on the hyper-local level.”

Hostin then brought up Killer Mike’s comments about Kemp after having met with him in 2022. He received fierce criticism from the left because of the meeting. Afterward, he explained his reasons for sitting down with the governor.

“More than anything, I’m a Southerner. I’m a Black man. I’ve been raised in a traditionally Democratic city. But my state is pretty conservative, always has been. So as a Southern man, I connected pretty much instantly with him. Politics and policy don’t matter to me as much as human decency and principles, and he seemed to be a principled human being when I talked to him.”

Hostin confronted the rapper, saying that she lost him with his “support of Kemp.” Killer Mike didn’t let the comment slide and retorted: "Not support of Kemp. That's some misinformation. You can not like me, but don't lie on me."

He continued:

"He's the governor of my state, I have to be involved with him, I can't divorce myself," he continued. "But let me say this, if you criticize someone, don't lie. Don't say I didn’t support [Stacey] Abrams because I did. Don’t say I don’t support Democrats because I’ve helped get three Democratic mayors elected, two state representatives elected, but if someone is in the king’s seat, I’m not going to not have dinner with the king on behalf of my people. I have to do that."

Killer Mike’s points likely flew over the heads of the co-hosts at “The View,” who only know how to act as propagandists for the Democratic Party. Their focus is on persuading their audience to support a party, not discussing how they should be involved in their local communities.

But Killer Mike was definitely speaking my language. As a journalist who focuses heavily on local politics, I can attest to the importance of his words. Indeed, everyone should have the same attitude. Chances are, your mayor can have a much bigger impact on your everyday life than the president. The government that is closest to you can do the most damage, a fact that is lost on far too many Americans. Things will only get better in this country when enough of us realize that all politics is local.
