Maine’s Secretary of State Shenna Bellows has been under scrutiny ever since she decided to remove former President Donald Trump from the ballot as part of a national effort to influence the outcome of the 2024 presidential election. She has been the subject of criticism from folks on both the left and the right. As I wrote earlier, she already faces impeachment proceedings, which Republican state Rep. John Andrews announced on Friday evening.
Now, Bellows is facing a lawsuit contesting her effort to skew the results of the upcoming election in President Joe Biden’s favor by using the 14th Amendment, according to a Daily Caller exclusive.
The Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project will be filing a lawsuit against Bellows’ office as part of a broader investigation into efforts to have Trump removed from Republican primary ballots, Heritage Oversight Project Director Mike Howell told the Caller in a statement Friday.
“It is beyond ugly that the radical left is once again reanimating Jim Crow politics. Seeing this trend across the country leads me to believe that Bellows is not acting alone, but instead as part of a potentially criminal conspiracy. We intend to gather evidence to potentially refer to law enforcement. We will be suing on behalf of all Americans very soon in furtherance of our investigation,” Howell said.
Bellows’ move is part of a widespread effort to prevent Trump from winning the White House again in 2024. The strategy involves using a provision of the 14th Amendment that bars people from holding public office if they have been involved in a rebellion against the government. Democrats and anti-Trump Republicans have invoked this provision, claiming that the former president somehow orchestrated the J6 riot.
The Heritage Foundation also filed a Freedom of Access Act (FOAA) request to unearth communications and records that could shed light on the motivation behind Bellows' decision, according to the Daily Caller.
Heritage’s records request includes all records containing the word “Trump” and all communications with Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), the left-wing group behind Colorado’s Supreme Court 4-3 decision to take Trump off the state’s Republican primary ballot.
The foundation’s efforts could have an impact on this debate, even beyond Maine. If the lawsuit succeeds and also reveals damning information about the true motivations of those participating in the push to influence the outcome of the election, it could hinder similar efforts in other states. Not only would this allow Trump to remain on the ballot, but it could also help him win more support when the rest of the country sees the corruption the left is engaging in.
This lawsuit, combined with the possibility that the Supreme Court will destroy the 14th Amendment stratagem for good, suggests that those hoping to skew the election in Biden’s favor by disqualifying Trump from running might have reason for concern since their efforts are likely to be shut down.
It will also be interesting to see how this gambit might backfire on the anti-Trump crowd. The former president will skillfully use this cynical plot to his advantage to rally his base. Indeed, it could indicate the reality that Democrats view him as the most dangerous threat in 2024.
