Well, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a host of Republican and Democratic lawmakers got their wish last night when they passed their sausage, ham, and bacon stimulus. Pelosi, particularly, seemed to believe that the American public benefited greatly from the legislation, which gives $600 to every eligible American.

During a speech on the House floor, Pelosi claimed the Democrats pushed for $1,200 in payments, the same amount paid out under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, but those nasty Republicans stopped it. But then, she made a remark that earned her much derision from people on both sides of the political divide.

“We also have in the legislation direct payments, which were not in the Republican bill, to America’s working families,” she said. “I would like them to have been bigger, but they are significant, and they will be going out soon.”

Both parties are getting battered by American voters for caring more about providing aid for foreign countries than taking care of their citizens first. But others took a stroll down memory lane and brought up comments the Speaker made in 2017.

Daily Caller associate editor Virginia Kruta tweeted: “I’m old enough to remember when @SpeakerPelosi called $2500 or so from the Trump Tax Cuts “crumbs” — and now she’s bragging about getting everyone $600.”

That’s right, back when President Trump and the GOP were touting their tax reform legislation, Pelosi said that the $2,500 that Americans would save were nothing more than “crumbs.” And yet, somehow, $600 is supposed to be a “significant” boon to the American public.

But perhaps we shouldn’t be too hard on Pelosi. Maybe she forgot that $600 is less than $2,500. It’s possible that she forgot she made those ridiculous comments three years ago. But if we want to be realistic, we should probably conclude that the Speaker assumes that everyone else has forgotten that she made her “crumbs” remarks.

The stimulus bill is yet another travesty of American governance. But what’s unfortunate is the fact that the lawmakers who supported a bill that is stuffed with enough pork to feed every American five BLT’s per day for a year will not be held accountable. Hell, only a few lawmakers showed concern about the fact that they didn’t have enough time to read the 5,000-page monstrosity. Democrats didn’t seem to want to read the bill before voting on it. It’s almost like they know they can sweet talk the American public into re-electing them like a cheating boyfriend persuades a woman not to leave him.

The bottom line is that we will never see an end to this type of legislation until we start making our elected officials feel the pain. When conservatives only show up at the polls during presidential elections, we are essentially telling our lawmakers that they can get away with murder without having to worry about keeping their seats. Perhaps it is time to reverse this trend?
