All he had to do was not come off as a leftist loon. All he had to do was be a positive foil to Trump’s purported negative attacks. All he had to do was not make the same mistake as the Dixie Chicks.
And yet, former VP Joe Biden couldn’t resist taking the anti-American road that usually takes you off course from your desired destination of success.
“The America I see values basic human decency, not snatching children from their parents or turning our back on refugees at our border,” Biden said while speaking at the Munich Security Conference this weekend. “Americans know that’s not right. The American people understand plainly that this makes us an embarrassment. The American people know, overwhelmingly, that it is not right. That it is not who we are.”
“You’re never allowed to disagree with your brothers and sisters in public. Today, because of, I think, a lack of leadership coming from the other side of the Atlantic, we find ourselves in a different place, and it’s uncomfortable.”
This is, of course, not how America feels about our current immigration crisis as it overwhelmingly wants to secure the border. It’s also highly hypocritical because the U.S. government was doing exactly everything Biden just condemned Trump for during the Obama Administration.
That America is an embarrassment to Biden for something we feel is important isn’t going to help him at all with the centrists who are currently thinking about jumping the Democrat ship should anyone from the Democratic side but Biden get the nomination.
At this time, a third of Democrats are perfectly willing to pull the lever for someone like former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, who comes off as the best of both worlds to lowercase “d” Democrats. It’s a delicate time for the party, and Biden doesn’t seem to be concerned.
Time will tell, but Biden was on course to being the Democrats main squeeze, and one of the only people who could have defeated Trump. The reason for this magic was a few factors. For one, he’s a national name brand. Uncle Joe used to stand next to the last vestige of happiness the Democrats ever knew in former President Barack Obama.
The second, however, was the fact that Biden appeared more as a centrist. Biden was the “politician” you could have a beer with. He seemed like an old school Democrat. The kind older generations voted for before the party began to transform into a radical shadow of its former self.
But today, these words come off as sour in a time when the Democratic party doesn’t just hate America’s system, it outright hates its people. It creates divides based on race, sexuality, and more. It creates a victim tier system that says if you’re born a certain way then you can either do no wrong or do nothing but wrong.
Our current border crisis is born from that kind of identity politics, and Americans — to borrow Biden’s words — know, overwhelmingly, that it is not right. That it is not who we are.
