Joe Biden Tells 'Jokes' at the Nerd Prom, Pushes a Hoax and Gives the Press Their Marching Orders

While you were hopefully enjoying your Saturday evening, some of us were hard at work torturing ourselves with clips of the White House Correspondents Dinner. Perhaps the dumbest, most tone-deaf event in Washington, the "nerd prom" is where journalists go to cosplay as celebrities while being assured they are saving the world.

How do you manage to make that dynamic even worse? You invite Joe Biden to speak and tell "jokes" like this.

BIDEN: I had a great stretch since the State of the Union, but Donald has had a few tough days lately. You might call it "stormy weather." What the hell?

Be sure to play the clip because as bad as the transcription looks, the president's bumbling delivery makes it all the worse. Props to the drug cocktail team for their work given how far past Biden's bedtime this took place, but they aren't miracle workers.

Of course, I'd quibble with the idea that the president has "had a great stretch since the State of the Union." Maybe that's what his handlers are telling him to keep his old-man anger at bay, but in the real world, Biden has the lowest approval rating of any president in history.

Naturally, the audience found his every utterance to be hilarious, though. Kamala Harris is shown almost falling over in manufactured laughter at the banger that is "Stormy weather. What the hell?"

I mean, come on. Who wrote this stuff? White House busboy Andrew Bates?

BIDEN: Some of you complain that I don't take enough of your questions. No comment. Of course, The New York Times issued a statement blasting me for quote, "actively and effectively avoiding independent journalists." Hey, if that's what it takes to get The New York Times to say I'm active and effective, I'm for it.

You'd think the journalists in the room would have some self-respect when faced with such mockery. Okay, you wouldn't think that, but Biden's "jokes" aside, he got down to business later in his speech by pushing the "bloodbath hoax" and demanding the press treat him as a savior of "democracy."

BIDEN: And [Trump] promised a "bloodbath" when he loses again. We have to take this seriously.

That's a debunked talking point that ignores Trump was using the term to describe what would happen to the auto industry and the economy, but does it matter? The former president says things, and the press and the White House lie about them. That's not exactly noteworthy anymore, and I'm well past the point of playing translator to defend every utterance that sets a CNN anchor's hair on fire.

The far more insidious aspect of Biden's commentary is what it's meant to do, which is to essentially hold "democracy" hostage by proclaiming that only he can preserve it. He continued that theme for several minutes.

BIDEN: Move past the horse race numbers and the gotcha moments, and the distractions, the sideshows that have come to dominate and sensationalize our politics, and focus on what's actually at stake, and I think in your hearts you know what's at stake. The stakes couldn't be higher.

When a politician tells you that you must elect them or "democracy" will cease to exist, that's called projection. Contrary to the mumblings of the president, democracy is not preserved by rigging the game and trying to negate the votes of the American people. That is exactly what Biden is doing by weaponizing the government against his opponent in an attempt to make the results of the election irrelevant.

BIDEN: On the third anniversary of January 6, I went to Valley Forge, and I said the most urgent question of our time is whether democracy is still, is still the sacred cause of America. That is the question the American people must answer this year, and you, the free press, play a critical role in making sure the American people have the information they need to make an informed decision.

The defeated former President has made no secret of his attack on our democracy. He said he wants to be a dictator on day one and so much more. He tells supporters he is their revenge and retribution. When in God's name have you ever heard another president say something like that? And he promised a bloodbath when he loses again. We have to take this seriously. Eight years ago, you could have written off as just Trump talk, but no longer, not after January 6. I'm sincerely not asking of you to take sides, but asking a rise up to the seriousness of the moment.

Biden says that the "American people must answer this year" whether "democracy is still, is still the sacred cause of America" as he actively tries to throw the man running against him in prison. The disconnect is astonishing if not completely expected at this point.

Will the press take their marching orders and do Biden's bidding? You can bet your house they will. Despite his false framing in the above excerpt, the president is asking them to take sides, and they'll gladly do so in service to his perverted, authoritarian idea of "democracy."
