Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett has argued that black Americans should be exempt from paying taxes. 

During an appearance on the 'Black Lawyers Podcast,' Crockett admitted that someone had suggested the exemption and that she realized it was "not necessarily a bad idea."

"I'd have to think through it a lot," she said. "One of the things they propose is Black folk not have to pay taxes for a certain amount of time because, then again, that puts money back in your pocket."

"But at the same time, it may not be as objectionable to some people [as] actually giving out dollars," she continued. "So many Black folk, not only do you owe for the labor that was stolen and killed and all the other things, right, but the fact is we end up being so far behind."

However, Crockett conceded that many poorer black people are not "paying taxes in the first place."

“If you do the no tax thing, for people that are already, say, struggling, and aren’t really paying taxes in the first place... I think that we first need to do a study. We need to be very thoughtful."

Earlier in the interview, she criticized opponents of reparations because they “aren’t even willing to do the studies, aren’t willing to invest to make sure we can roll this out the right way.”

“To think that America doesn’t owe the descendants of slaves is an error," she added. 

Crockett, who was first elected in November 2022, represents a deep blue district in Texas and recently scored a blowout victory of 91.5 percent of the Democratic primary vote on Super Tuesday. 

Last December, Crockett argued that the reason many black Americans were losing patience with Joe Biden was that they were letting their "feelings" cloud their judgment: 

And so while the facts may not align with their feelings, their feelings are dictating their reality. Their reality is that they said that they feel better or they felt better when Trump was in office. But we have been trying to push back. We have got some very popular African-American artists that are out here saying things like, oh, I got checks when Trump was in office, I want those checks again, not understanding that really came from Congress.

So we have got a couple of things, the perception issue. And then we also have an issue as it relates to civics in this country and people not understanding exactly how any of this works.

Crockett has also taken inspiration from Hillary Clinton, describing her home state of Texas as "deplorable" after its Republican-led legislature passed a series of bills attempting to crack down on the illegal immigration crisis on the southern border.
