"Higher Culture" is pleased to see the trend of new movies opening in theaters continuing ... including this weekend. And one of them that's worth talking about was directed by someone most people wouldn't expect. I sure didn't.
Oscar-nominated actor Michael Keaton appeared on the latest episode of "Fly on the Wall" podcast with co-hosts David Spade and Dana Carvey, and talked about his second time directing a movie. But he also talked about Sunday's Oscars ceremony, at which he presented, plus took part in some epic "Batman" shenanigans/segment with former co-stars Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger
(A brief aside here: if you're someone who loves or loved "Saturday Night Live," make sure to check out the podcast. The guys chat with former cast members and guest hosts from throughout the span of the show's history. It's an awesome concept, and anyone who's a fan of either Carvey or Spade will love the podcast!)
As I mentioned, Keaton acted as a presenter ... and it was with former "Beetlejuice" co-star Catherine O'Hara. Fans of the original movie loved that they walked out to the theme. But this is a juicier story related to that reunion. In a recent interview with SiriusXM, the actor talked about getting an early screening of the new "Beetlejuice" movie (which is officially called "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice"):
Keaton said, "It's just so fun. I've seen it now. I'm going to see it again, after a couple of little tweaks in the editing room. And I confidently say this thing is great."
He continued: "We finally got a script that was good and at that point, you just try to [do it]....It sure was fun. Man, it was fun."
"Beetlejuice 2" comes out in September 2024.
Alright, now we can move on to the shenanigans, because why not?
My colleague Brad Slager set it up nicely in his round-up of the Academy Awards this year: "While presenting for Best Special Effects, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny DeVito, and Michael Keaton had a good Batman moment." He's making an understatement there. As I said, it was an epic "Batman" moment!

Spade asked him how far in advance the show producers tell you the details of a segment you'll be in. Keaton said:
Wow, very good observation....When I left the rehearsal [for presenting], on the way home, I got a text from [Oscars host Jimmy] Kimmel or Molly, his wife, or both, saying, 'Would you do this one thing?" And I had planned to do the thing with Catherine, leave, and then go to one of the parties or something. So I thought, shoot, alright. They told me about the bit and I thought that could be kind of funny.
I don't know who came up with that, frankly, whether it was something that Danny threw out, because I saw him there. They asked if I would do it, and I said sure.[...]
I brought along ... I didn't just want to show up, like you saw me just a few minutes ago [on the broadcast] ... I had this Ascot to go "full Bruce Wayne" kind of thing. I actually had a wardrobe change. So, running in the back, there was confusion at that point. I thought: it won't work, don't worry about it.

But Keaton was mainly sitting down with the duo to promote his new film, "Knox Goes Away," a thriller that saw limited release in September 2023, but comes out nationwide on Friday, Mar. 15, starring himself, Al Pacino, James Marsden, and Marcia Gay Harden. And while it's a thriller, it has what appears to me to be a unique element up front: Keaton's character, who is a contract killer, learns that he suffers from a rare form of dementia and only has weeks to live. He learns that his son is in trouble, and seeks to help him before time (literally) runs out.
Take a listen to him talking about it with the guys [on the podcast video, starting at 28:07]
