There’s election news out of the state of Florida with only an indirect connection to Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis. The state Democrat Party held a meeting Saturday to elect a new chair.
Politico reporter Gary Fineout reported on the breakdown of how the vote would work:
There were about 1161 votes available and it takes a majority to win. But apparently not all DEC voters or their proxy voters are here – thus bringing down total needed to win
— Gary Fineout (@fineout) February 25, 2023
He also shared the “votes are weighted with large counties having more votes than small counties,” and that “[c]andidates are being allowed to speak for 3 minutes each.”
Then three candidates spoke, one to remove his name from contention and endorse Nikki Fried:
Broward Chair Rick Hoye says he’s withdrawing his name for consideration & calls on DEC to back @NikkiFried

The third candidate also, essentially, endorsed Fried:
In her remarks @Annette_Taddeo says Dems need to start winning again, tells @NikkiFried “I will be there for you no matter who wins.”

Now, the Florida Democrat Party has announced the winner:
The Florida Democratic Party congratulates @NikkiFried on being elected to lead our party as the new Chair. We look forward to working together to elect Democrats up and down the ballot to deliver for Floridians. pic.twitter.com/hwgHHlhgH6

The tally on Fried’s win was 52 percent:
And @NikkiFried is the new @FlaDems chair with 52 percent of vote

Fried spoke after the win:
In her remarks after winning Fried says “You better believe we are going to take it to Ron DeSantis every damn day” and work to keep him out of the White House. She adds they are going to “send Rick Scott” home to Naples in 24
That’ll be a neat trick, indeed. Though Fried seems to have strong words, especially against DeSantis, readers might recognize Fried as the Democrat gubernatorial primary loser to Charlie Crist in August 2022. DeSantis went on to soundly defeat the Democrat in the midterms, 59 to 41 percent. As the Democrats are slow to learn—actions matter, not just words.
