Just a few months ago, had you thought former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was fading into the background? Welcome to 2020, where NFL means Not For Long.
In fact, in addition to what looks like an impending return to the National Football League, Colin’s hitting the big screen — that would be, in this pandemic’d period, your 65-inch flatscreen.
Fox News reports the social justice symbol and veteran producer Ava DuVernay are partnering on a new 6-part scripted series for Netflix.
The show will follow Colin during his “formative high school years, lending meaningful insight into the acts and experiences that led him to become the activist he is today.”
The program will be narrated by none other than the man himself.
In a press release Monday, Selma producer and When They See Us director Ava praised Kaepernick:
“With his act of protest, Colin Kaepernick ignited a national conversation about race and justice with far-reaching consequences for football, culture and for him, personally. Colin’s story has much to say about identity, sports and the enduring spirit of protest and resilience. I couldn’t be happier than to tell this story with the team at Netflix.”
And here’s how Netflix put it in their tweeted promotion:
“He would grow up to play in the Super Bowl and realize you never stop fighting for your dreams. She would grow up to tell stories that matter to millions. From @Kaepernick7 & @ava, the dramatic scripted series Colin In Black & White follows the H.S. years of Colin Kaepernick.”

About the show, Colin downed American pervasive “white lens” while indicating the series will tell the story of “an adopted black man in a white community”:
“Too often we see race and Black stories portrayed through a white lens. We seek to give new perspective to the differing realities that Black people face. We explore the racial conflicts I faced as an adopted Black man in a white community, during my high school years. It’s an honor to bring these stories to life in collaboration with Ava for the world to see.”
Neflix Original Content Vice President Cindy Holland is psyched:
“We’re proud to bring Colin’s experience and his creative vision to life as he joins Ava to share his powerful story and message with all our members around the world.”
One thing seems sure: Regardless of athletics, Colin Kaepernick’s career isn’t over. And his rise to heroic heights among the political Left has been quite the spectacle — the guy became famous by protesting the iniquity of America…and made $20 million along the way.
