European Eco-Loons' Climate Stunt Endangers Irreplaceable Piece of History

King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden was one of Europe's most significant figures. One of the Vasa line, during his reign, Sweden took its first steps towards becoming a modern state; he was a major figure in the Thirty Years War, and was a major factor in ending that conflict. He also commissioned a warship, the Vasa, which unfortunately sank almost within sight of the dock shortly after launching. But in 1956, that ship was found, recovered, and is now in the Swedish National Maritime and Transport Museum. It's the only 17th-century ship in any museum, anywhere; it's the only 17th-century ship of its kind that still exists in anything close to intact condition.

So, of course, some European eco-loons boarded it and very likely did damage to this historic relic of inestimable value, because they're nuts.

Climate activists from the left-wing group ‘Restore Wetlands,’ known for resorting to criminal acts to advance their agenda, forced their way past protective barriers on Wednesday and climbed aboard the Vasa—the world’s only surviving intact 17th-century ship—housed inside the museum that bears its name.

According to Expressen, the activists tied themselves to the mast, unfurled a banner reading “Stop Peat Mining,” and shouted slogans before being removed by police. Their organization—which, in its manifesto, declares that “playing along” with parliamentary democracy is “purely destructive”—was proudly and unapologetically promoting the stunt on its website.

For once, a European piece of eco-nitwittery took place that doesn't appear to have Greta "Pippi Longspieling" Thunberg's fingerprints on it. But the Director of the museum issued a sternly worded response:

Lars Amréus, Director General of the Swedish National Maritime and Transport Museums—of which the Vasa Museum is a part—said in a press release:

We strongly condemn this type of action, which endangers both personal safety and our shared cultural heritage. Such actions have no place in museums or the cultural sector at large. Our main focus is to ensure that Vasa has not been damaged.

Amréus emphasized the ship’s fragility: “Ninety-eight to ninety-nine percent of the ship is original, so they have undoubtedly moved on original parts of the ship,” which could have caused harm to the vessel.

So, what's missing here is the charges filed against these loons. While it seems that the damage done to the ship is still being evaluated, it shouldn't be too soon to start charging these people with trespassing and vandalism, at the very least. Leniency for acts like this will be (rightly) taken for weakness and indecisiveness by the loons, and will only encourage them to indulge in more trespassing and more vandalism.

Sweden needs to levy some significant penalties on these nuts.

A Swedish columnist, Linda Jerneck, has the right take on this:

Still, putting the best-preserved 17th-century ship at risk “reveals the activists’ fanaticism,” columnist Linda Jerneck wrote: “Restore Wetlands wants us to show solidarity with future generations—by pissing on what previous generations left behind.”

That's rather colorful, but Linda Jerneck is correct. But it's worse. These eco-loons are not only initiating micturition on the past, including on the legacy of one of Sweden's greatest kings, but also on the future. They oppose everything that makes our modern lifestyle possible. They oppose, in effect, modern civilization. And this latest act just shows the callous disregard they have for the past, the present, and the future.
