Sweden: A Cautionary Tale, and What's Being Left Out of the Discussion

Europe may well be a lost cause. Decades of unchecked, largely unscreened immigration, in the form of "asylum seekers," mostly from some of the most unstable areas in the world, have allowed the Third World to overrun the nations that were the first products of post-Roman Western civilization. In the name of "multiculturalism" and "diversity," these people were allowed to flood in to avail themselves of most of Europe's generous social-welfare systems, and now the nations of Europe count the cost.

Case in point: Sweden. A once calm and peaceful place, a neutral power in both world wars, Sweden now struggles with an explosion of gang violence, a flourishing drug trade, and even child soldiers - and, no, they aren't Vikings. They are the result of a mushy-headed government that values diversity and mulitculturalism över allt.

To show me just how bad gang crime has become in Sweden, all journalist Diamant Salihu has to do is forward a few mobile phone messages. At first glance, they look like spam, written in garish fonts and promising large sums of money, there to be earned. It’s only on closer examination that the purpose of the pistol and skull emojis becomes clear.

These are so-called “murder ads” – posted online by gang leaders, offering bounties to anyone willing to carry out the hits.

Yes, this is Sweden, not Gaza, not Afghanistan - although there is a common factor. More on that in a moment. As to the contract killings themselves, the people doing the hiring have no scruples about hiring children - in fact, they have no scruples about anything.

“All types of jobs are available,” reads one, promising up to one million krona (£78,000). “Age doesn’t matter”, adds another – explaining why many of Sweden’s new contract killers aren’t hardened hitmen, but children. Part of the problem, some say, is that Swedish law dictates anyone aged under 15 is too young to be prosecuted.

“We have so many child soldiers that nobody can count anymore,” sighs Salihu, an investigative reporter for SVT, Sweden’s answer to the BBC. “There are kids as young as 13 being arrested.”

This exposes yet another flaw: that Sweden's law prohibits prosecution of anyone under 15. So, a 14-year-old can hose down a target with an AK - funny, that, as Sweden's gun-control laws don't allow ownership of such a rifle, and yet, here we are - and he can't be prosecuted?

But there's an elephant in this multicultural room that Sweden seems hesitant to face.

...the sense of failure is all the more acute in Sweden, long an open door compared to other European nations. Ever since the 1960s, when it first styled itself as a humanitarian superpower, it has taken in those fleeing trouble abroad, be it Americans fleeing the Vietnam war draft, Soviet dissidents, or Iraqis fleeing Saddam Hussein’s regime. In the 1990s came refugees from the Balkans, and in the last decade asylum seekers from Syria, Afghanistan and sub-Saharan Africa have arrived. Anxious not to create “parallel societies”, Swedish governments have long funded social integration programmes alongside the waves of migration.

But parallel societies have sprung up regardless, according to Salihu, who lived until the age of eight on his family’s farm in Kosovo, where even cars were a luxury.

It's a safe bet that the American draft-dodgers or even the Soviet dissidents weren't engaging in gang warfare or contract killings. But Iraq? Syria? Afghanistan? One could make the argument that if you want more multiculturalism, this is how you get more multiculturalism and all that goes with it. Sweden and Europe have imported millions from the Third World, and in so doing, have imported Third World values and actions.

And the glaring, unmentioned common thread? The real troublemakers are coming from majority Muslim nations.

The Economist Declares Europe the New 'Land of the Free,' and Holy Cow, the Replies

We may have already lost Europe. There are a few holdouts: Hungary, Poland, to name a couple of nations who are determined to maintain their cultural distinctiveness. But Scandinavia, the United Kingdom, France, Italy - they are being overrun, and their governments have facilitated the debacle. Until January 20th of this year, the American government seemed determined to follow that same course.

Immigration must be accompanied by integration. If someone comes to Sweden, they should be expected to live by and abide by Swedish customs, the Swedish language, and Swedish ideals. The same for anyone who immigrates to Britain, France, Italy - or the United States. To allow for otherwise, as much of Europe has done, is to commit cultural suicide. Sweden, as we see from this piece, is learning this the hard way, and likely, too late; the barbarians are clearly already inside the city walls, and the primary remaining value Sweden has for us is to serve as a precautionary tale.
