Melania Trump Seems Like She's Aiming for a Higher FLOTUS Profile This Time Around

During President Donald Trump's first term, First Lady Melania Trump seemed to be purposely keeping a lower profile than most first ladies. She appeared on President Trump's arm at the usual events, but most of her focus — rightly so — seemed to be on being Mom to her and Donald's son Barron.

But Barron is all grown up now, and Melania Trump seems to see herself maintaining a somewhat higher profile in her husband's second term. On Monday, she sat down for another interview with Fox News's "Fox and Friends" to discuss her plans.

Melania Trump said in an interview Monday that she is excited for another four years in the White House -— and is ready to be a key adviser to her husband, President-elect Donald Trump.

The incoming first lady told Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” that she is more confident now she understands “the rules” and “process” of being in the White House — and that she will help her husband as they “have a lot to do to put the country back in shape.”

“The first time was challenging, we didn’t have much of the information. The information was withheld from us by the previous administration,” she said of Trump’s predecessor before his first term, President Barack Obama.

She did put forth one qualifying remark about her husband's political stances; but then, it's an observation that would seem to apply to any marriage. (It certainly applies to mine.)

“Maybe some people see me as just a wife of the president, but I’m standing on my own two feet, independent. I have my own thoughts, I have my own, ‘yes’ and ‘no,'” she continued.

The 54-year-old conceded that while she doesn’t always agree with what her husband “is saying or doing” she is committed to helping out his administration when she can.

“I give him my advice and sometimes he listens, and sometimes he doesn’t, but that’s OK,” she said.

No two people in any marriage since the beginning of that ancient institution have agreed on everything, so this is hardly a novel statement. And she is correct that there is a lot to be done, starting, we might note, one week from today. But of all the advisors anyone in any such position might surround themselves with, a spouse is in a unique position. President Trump may not always agree with her and may not always act on her advice; he is certainly a man of great self-assurance and personal drive, after all. But I would be serious money that he listens to her.

What will be refreshing in the next few years will be that we can now once more view the person bearing the title of First Lady with some respect. About Melania Trump, I can say this with great conviction: She brings intelligence, style, grace, and yes, dignity to the position of First Lady of the United States that we have not seen in some time — not from Frau Doktor Professor Jill Biden, not from Michelle Obama, and most certainly not from Her Imperial Majesty Hillary I, Dowager-Empress of Chappaqua. It will be interesting, in these next four years, to see what Melania Trump will bring to the table. She will not sell herself as a "co-president," as did Hillary Clinton, and she will not be like Jill Biden, pulling the strings on her inept and dementia-raddled husband. What she will be is a key advisor and maybe the one person that Donald Trump will always listen to, even if he ends up disagreeing.
