On Tuesday, David DePape, the man who attacked former Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband, Paul Pelosi, with a hammer in October 2022, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Judge Harry Dorfman handed down the sentence after dismissing calls for a new trial.
The man who was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for attacking the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with a hammer in their California home was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole following a separate state trial.
A San Francisco jury in June found David DePape guilty of charges including aggravated kidnapping, first-degree burglary and false imprisonment of an elder.
Suzanna Phan, an ABC News reporter in the area, reported on X:

Presumably, when Judge Dorfman reportedly says, "He went in to attack a leader of the federal government," he is referring to the plan to kidnap Nancy Pelosi, as her husband, Paul Pelosi, the victim, is neither a leader of the federal government nor involved in government affairs.
The defendant, David DePape, read a statement at the sentencing hearing, and it was, not to put too fine a point on it, daffy.
When given the chance to address the court prior to his sentencing, DePape, dressed in prison orange and with his brown hair in a ponytail, spoke at length about Sept. 11 being an inside job, his ex-wife being replaced by a body double, and his government-provided attorneys conspiring against him.
"I'm a psychic," DePape told the court, reading from sheets of paper. "The more I meditate, the more psychic I get."
He apparently wasn't psychic enough to understand that a life sentence was headed his way when he decided to assault Paul Pelosi.
David DePape has already been convicted of federal charges, including assaulting a federal official's family member and attempting to kidnap a federal official. In May, DePape was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for those crimes, which term will be served concurrently with his new sentence.

Kidnapping was, by DaPape's own admission, what he had in mind.
DePape admitted during his federal trial that he planned to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage, record his interrogation of her, and "break her kneecaps" if she did not admit to the lies he said she told about "Russiagate," a reference to the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign.
This, clearly, is a guy who is better off in the crowbars - and the people of the United States are a little safer with him there, as well.
