Dr. George Koob, who is apparently the Biden Administration's alcohol czar (why the hell is there such a thing as an alcohol czar?) plans to issue strict new alcohol-intake guidelines limiting Americans to two beers a week. Good luck with that.
Americans could be urged by officials to drink no more than two beers a week as part of strict new alcohol guidelines.
Biden's health czar told DailyMail.com the USDA could revise its alcohol advice to match Canada's, where people are advised to have just two drinks per week.
Dr George Koob — who admits enjoying a couple of glasses of Chardonnay a week — said he was watching Canada's 'big experiment' with interest.
'If there's health benefits, I think people will start to re-evaluate where we're at [in the US],' he told DailyMail.com.
Current US recommendations say women can have up to one bottle of beer, small glass of wine or shot of spirit a day while men can have two.
But those guidelines are up for review in 2025.
My immediate impulse is to tell Dr. Koob how tightly he can fold his guidelines and what to do with them after that, and my suggestion will be something that isn't going to be comfortable.
Didn't we, as a nation, try to control people's booze intake once already? Remember how well that worked? Most Americans are pretty fond of a cold beer (as long as it's not a Bud Light) or a snort of something stronger now and then. Personally, I enjoy a snort or two of Scotch in the evening, and I usually have a couple of beers with our traditional Saturday lunch at the Valley's own Sheep Creek Lodge. I'm going to continue to do that no matter what some unelected government finger-wagger "advises."
This is revealing:
Dr Koob said he consumes around two glasses of white wine per week, usually a 'buttery Californian Chardonnay'.
So a guy who drinks "buttery Californian Chardonnay" is going to tell me to knock off my evening tipple? Oh, screw that. I mean, we're seeing all kinds of government interference in our lives these days, but this is just too much. We put up with the excessive taxation; we put up with them trying to push us into electric cars, we put up with them debasing the currency so everything costs more, we put up with them involving us in foreign wars that are none of our business.
But don't you dare lecture us on our booze! Intemperance is the only reason most of us can deal with you interfering government busybodies in the first place, so unless you want to see things get really out of hand, hands off our drinks!
Look, there are health risks to drinking alcohol. There are health risks to lots of things. There are health risks to getting out of bed in the morning. But, unless you've been living under a flat rock for the last hundred years or so, you know what those risks are. Part of being a functional adult in a free society is knowing the possible consequences of all your actions, making your own decisions, and dealing with the results. We can do that without some government functionary looking over our shoulders.
Oh, and by the way, where in the Constitution is the federal government authorized to have an "alcohol czar?" The Founders certainly wouldn't have written that in; at least one of them, we know, was fond of a snort every now and then himself.
All I have to say to the Biden Administration's "alcohol czar" I can't repeat here, but it will end with the phrase "...and the horse you rode in on."
I'll let George Thorogood have the last word.
