Oh, how The Times They Are A-Changin'.
If you're not careful, things in politics and pop culture will move quickly, and if you try to keep up with it, you'll get whiplash in your neck and be damn near paralyzed with fear at how fast everything moves.
A case in point is the former 45th president of the United States, Donald Trump, who's making a run at also becoming the 47th president of the United States. He has been in the news recently for his primary and caucus wins in Iowa and New Hampshire. He also has made some news up here in Michigan, which I recently talked about here and here.
One of the incredibly persuasive points that people who adore Trump make is that before he got into politics, he lived a life of ease financially and in the public eye. He was an entertainer who dealt in real estate and turned his ability to do PR and salesmanship into one of his greatest assets.
He had a whole mix of people from all walks of life who had no issue taking a picture with him or wanting to make an appearance on his reality TV show “The Apprentice." I don't want to say he was beloved, but he was pretty well-liked and did not have any of the venom he currently gets as a political target rerunning for the presidency.
The one thing Trump does not shy away from is controversy; rather, he enjoys the give and take of sparring with the political press that follows the president around everywhere he goes. Trump would stop and answer questions walking down the hallway in the White House going to the bathroom as opposed to where Biden has to be put in a rubber suit surrounded by bubble wrap to get him from point A to point B.
However, one of the people who had a beef with him during his last stay at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue now has the warm fuzzies I read about here.
Snoop Dogg has explained why he has “nothing but love and respect” for Donald Trump in a surprising U-turn.
The rapper made the comments in a new interview, years after being embroiled in a feud with the former president, who is running for office again in the 2024 US election.
Seemingly putting his days of trolling Trump behind him, Snoop told The Times on Sunday (28 January): “Donald Trump? He has done nothing wrong to me. He has done only great things for me.”
The article continues with why Snoop had an about-face.
The rapper then expressly referred to the time Trump “pardoned Michael Harris”, the co-founder of Snoop’s first label, Death Row, who was in prison for drug offences.
He added: “So I have nothing but love and respect for Donald Trump.”
You might recall the dust-up with Ice Cube back in 2020, where he was reaching out to people to talk about issues facing people in the inner city. He reached out to the Biden camp, who told him let's talk later, and the Trump team, who responded, let's chat. Tucker Carlson talked with him about it right here:
Ice Cube also talked about his politics. In 2020, the Biden and Trump campaigns contacted him about his “The Contract with Black America” initiative. The Biden team, he said, paid lip service and said they’d talk after the election. The Trump campaign asked, “Do you mind talking to us about it?” which the rapper did.
Carlson asked, “Do you think that crossed the line?”
“I think some people didn’t like that, but I think it’s idiotic. Enemies meet,” he said. “We’ve just got to talk. That’s the only way we’re going to work this out. I know that when the talkin’ stops, the fighting starts.”
Is this representative of a possible thawing of people in the entertainment industry looking at Trump and giving him a second chance?
Maybe.
Believe it or not, people who are worth millions also know that the economy is in bad shape. They pay people lots of money to keep an eye on their fortunes, not let the money run out, and keep it safe.
My hunch is that those entertainers who grew up poor and still have a sense of what it's like in these middle-class communities are able to realize that the country as a whole did much better under the four years of Trump and they have done under three and a half years of Biden.
Now that Trump is the de facto GOP nominee until the official coronation ceremony this summer in Milwaukee, he and his team have an opportunity to fine-tune their message to reach out to people who have done worse under the Biden Administration than they ever could have dreamed while Trump was in office the first time.
Who knows, maybe Snoop Dogg could be a featured and honored guest at Trump's second inaugural ball, and he could bring Martha Stewart as his date.
I'm sure official Washington, D.C., would eat that up, and TMZ would have a field day covering it.
