Do you need proof that miracles never cease? Somebody from CNN actually spoke the truth about how the media has given the coverage equivalent of non-ceasing Hershey Kisses to Dr. Anthony Fauci. This should give us hope even if it is for a fleeting moment in time.
Most of the world knows that last week Tony Fauci made one of those appearances before a Senate committee that one of his critics, Senator Rand Paul is a member of. Of course, Sen. Paul and Fauci are not fans of each other, and the Senator from Kentucky makes no bones about it. My colleague Streiff wrote this last week covering the latest verbal scuffle between the two. The Left and Right Can Agree That Dr. Fauci Was a Disingenuous and Evasive Little Weasel in His Answers to Senator Rand Paul. From that article…
The White House and the media tried to spin this as a win for Fauci, but only the most childish of intellects can fail to see the evasion and the near state of panic that Fauci was in on being called out for his direct responsibility for a global pandemic (or bioweapons attack if the virus is proven to be engineered in the Wuhan Institute for Virology). This close-up of Fauci’s hand was making the rounds shortly after the hearing. This is not the biological response of a confident man or a man who thinks he’s winning the argument. This is the essence of the fight-flee-hide response.
Give his article a look to see the video posted of Fauci fidgeting while under verbal fire.
These confrontations are all well and good but the most time any Senator gets is 10 minutes to ask questions and any experienced hack in Washington knows how to drag out their answer to eat up the clock. This is why I just wish that at one of these “hearings’ all the GOP side would just give their time to Rand and let him dance with the Tony for the full duration. We might get some useful answers or at least some tears from someone.
As Streiff mentions above most of the media outlets were happy to spew out talking points issued by Jen Psaki and the White House on how well Fauci did. That is hardly surprising given how much water the media carried for Biden and Fauci during the COVID response and campaign last year.
What surprised me was that someone from the network that still employs Brian Stelter actually called out the nonsense that most media have given to the NIH director. Mary Katharine Ham called it “fangirling,” and I think she is spot on.
From the Daily Caller:
CNN political commentator Mary Katharine Ham said Wednesday morning on “New Day” that White House senior medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci has good reason to face tough questions on the coronavirus, after Fauci and Republican Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul exchanged heated words during a Senate hearing.
When asked why there is a “fixation” on “attacking” Fauci, Ham said that he has covered up his public health decisions, casting a wave of doubt over him.
“I think it’s that Fauci is a very powerful public official who deserves – and rarely gets – tough questioning in almost any realm. He gets, frankly, a lot of fangirling and a lot of just sort of forum for his ideas and he doesn’t get a lot of pushback. Sen. Paul understood the assignment here, he’s asking about a tough subject that admittedly none of us are experts on, but I would like to know a lot more about,” Ham said.
Any panel that has David Gregory on it after the nonsense he pulled over at NBC is somewhat clown car-like, but even with that, MKH is really spot on here.
Fauci was made somewhat saint-like at this time last year even after backtracking on some things that he had said that turned out to be wrong. Most of the reporting of anything with him has been in the softest light possible to try and keep that view of him still relevant in the public.
The question that Ham was asked is proof of this need to keep Fauci untouchable. Why is there a fixation on attacking the good saints’ credibility? Can you imagine anyone on CNN asking that about any person who is in any way affiliated with a conservative republican? They would sooner choke on their own vomit before venturing a thought like that.
With some parts of the country trending into higher COVID cases and the rumors starting about lockdown again now is the time to review what the CDC and Dr. Fauci did wrong and drill them on how to improve. The fangirling and arse-kissing time is over and now is the time to get some answers from a normal human being like the rest of us.
The good/bad doctor puts his drawers on one leg at a time like the rest of us.
Let’s take the cue from Mary Katherine Ham and call out the fangirling and tell those doing it to knock it off.
