In theory, I love the idea of a Convention of the States to makes some changes to the founding document of the land. The practicality of it in today’s political environment terrifies me.

The Center for State-led National Debt Solutions on Monday announced that the Republican Walker will serve as its national honorary chair. The group did not say whether Walker would be paid for the work and what exactly he would be doing.

Wisconsin’s Republican-controlled Legislature in 2017 officially requested a convention to pass a balanced budget amendment. Democrats say it’s a bad idea and would open the door to other amendments being offered.

Now, the very reason the Democrats in Wisconsin did not love the idea in 2017 is the same reason I’m hesitant about this. You don’t know what other things the delegates will get into and amened while they have the chance.

The original convention had such luminaries as Geroge Washington, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, and future Broadway musical star Alexandar Hamilton. For all we know, the states now could send Hillary Clinton, Elizabeth Warren, and future poet laureate Beto O’Rourke to charm attendees out of the current meaning of the 2nd Amendment.

I wholeheartedly agree with the goal of the Center for State-led National Debt Solutions and Gov. Walker is a fabulous pick to lead this effort to get a handle on the national debt. If we could duplicate a bunch of Scott Walkers to be delegates to this convention, I would be 100% down for this. However, being as the technology does not exist for that yet, I’m going to need to be convinced that opening up the founding document to a convention like this won’t ruin the actual document.

One last thing. Don’t hold the 2nd convention in Philadelphia. Those people throw batteries at Santa Claus at football games.
