House minority leader Nancy Pelosi isn’t known for being an independent voice in the increasingly radical Democrat party, a party whose ideological lurch to the left took place under her watch, so her recent remarks about DNC chairman Tom Perez are a bit surprising.

Perez recently declared that the Democrat party would no longer support pro-life candidates after groups like NARAL said they’d close their coffers to the party if they continued to do so. The party had apparently made the major mistake of supporting a pro-life candidate for mayor of Omaha, Neb. Perez’s declaration signaled the party’s intention to go all-in on a radical pro-abort agenda.

Not so fast, says Pelosi.

“I grew up Nancy D’Alesandro, in Baltimore, Maryland; in Little Italy; in a very devout Catholic family; fiercely patriotic; proud of our town and heritage, and staunchly Democratic,” she added, referring to the fact that she is the daughter and sister of former mayors of that city. “Most of those people — my family, extended family — are not pro-choice. You think I’m kicking them out of the Democratic Party?”

It’s important to note here that Pelosi does not refer to herself as being “not pro-choice” (i.e., the oh-so-Catholic Nancy D’Alesandro from Baltimore is truly the oh-so-pro-abortion Nancy Pelosi from San Francisco). So calling out Perez does not mean she’s supportive of the pro-life faction of her party, but rather that she’s tired of being the House minority leader.

“You know what? That’s why Donald Trump is president of the United States — the evangelicals and the Catholics, anti-marriage equality, anti-choice. That’s how he got to be president,” she said. “Everything was trumped, literally and figuratively by that.”

It’s all about the votes. She knows full well that 3 out of 10 Democrats hold the pro-life belief that abortion should be illegal in nearly all circumstances.

But, at least she’s paying lip service to the idea that Democrats should allow for some diversity of thought within their ranks, unlike her party chairman. Does that make Nancy Pelosi an outlier in the Democrat party?
