Donald Trump seriously lacks the ability to discern between treason and just when somebody doesn’t like him.
I know. To Trump, it’s pretty much the same thing.
While speaking in Ohio earlier Monday, touting the recently passed GOP tax plan, Trump couldn’t help but revisit his warmly received State of the Union address.
Except, with Trump, it’s never as simple as just taking the win and walking away.
He had a good night. Of course, he let Devin Nunes and his muppets steal the weekend from him with their memo drop, but he’ll be reminding everybody of that night for the next 6 months.
In his Ohio speech, he covered the reaction of Democrats to his announcement of an improved unemployment status among minorities.
“They would rather see Trump do badly, OK, than our country do well. That’s what it means, it’s very selfish,” he said. “It got to a point where I really didn’t even want to look too much during the speech over to that side, because honestly it was bad energy. No, it was bad energy.”
Does anybody else hear him speaking of himself in third person and wonder if maybe he’s having some sort of episode?
“You’re up there and you have half the room going totally crazy wild. They loved everything, they want to do something great for our country,” he continued. “And you have the other side, even on positive news, really positive news like that, they were like death. And un-American, un-American.”
Dissent is not un-American. It may have been rude. It may have been ill-advised, even, but not “un-American.” You don’t get to make that call, Sir.
Trump added: “Somebody said treasonous. I mean, yeah, I guess why not. Can we call that treason? Why not. They certainly didn’t seem to love our country very much.”
It’s not the country they have a problem with. It’s you.
And “treason” deals with waging war against our own nation, or aiding the enemy in their efforts to do harm to our nation. You would be hard pressed to find any court willing to say not giving applause to Donald Trump is treason.
Truthfully, it was petty and wrong of them, but not unexpected. Sometimes you look bigger by not reacting. Don’t overshadow that with nonsense.
These are the silly things Trump says day in and day out that distract from whatever good message he might have to deliver.
