Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich joined Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Thursday night, in order to lament law and order that they absolutely would have celebrated, if it were President Hillary Clinton in the crosshairs of a grand jury investigation.
Gingrich and Hannity have helped push a phrase that is quickly growing to indicate the presence of intense, alt-right, Alex Jones-flavored lunacy.
Deep state.
“The Mueller threat has probably been the most deadly, he has the power of the law, he has the ability to indict people, the ability to negotiate and let some people off if they’ll testify against other people,” said Gingrich, also a Fox News contributor.
“I regard the Mueller example as the deep state at its very worst and it worries me. It fits the whole case that we’ve seen the Justice Department at times being out of control,” he continued.
“[Trump is] making progress every week, he’s getting things done. He’s beginning to move toward a tax cut bill that will be historic. He’s gotten more judges approved than Obama had at this point, Obama and a Democratic Congress. Despite everything, I think the Trump system is beginning to work.”
Ok, Newt.
Except this is just about standard procedure in these cases. While it seems like a big deal, showing how serious they are about this investigation, if Trump and his team are as pure as his loyalists maintain, then they should welcome the chance to have Trump’s name cleared, completely.
People like Hannity and Gingrich are so voracious in their defense of Trump that they make him look guilty. And they forget the underlying cause of the investigation. A hostile foreign government interfered in a U.S. election. Getting to the bottom of that should be priority one.
Trump lawyer, Ty Cobb, has the right idea.
“The White House favors anything that accelerates the conclusion of his work fairly,” Cobb said in a statement. “The White House is committed to fully cooperating with Mr. Mueller.”
Somebody print that out on coffee mugs and send them over to Hannity and Gingrich.
