WHAT'S ON TAP?

Today on Capitol Hill...

They're ba-ack. That's right, the critters are back on the Hill — and I don't mean staging a photo-op sit-in on the steps. They're sort of easing back into things, though: On Monday, the only formal hearing/meeting set is a House Rules Committee Meeting at 4:00 pm Eastern.

However, there will be a meeting (at the White House) between President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) this afternoon, along with several other House leaders, as they start looking to finalize the rescissions package.

White House What's Up

Prior to his meeting with Speaker Johnson, President Trump will have lunch with Vice President JD Vance. And then later in the afternoon, he'll welcome the 2025 Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles to the White House. After that, he's set to sign "executive orders focused on restoring law and order and securing the homeland."

Full Court Press...

We caught a slight reprieve over the weekend — no surprise midnight rulings from the Supreme Court or wild turn-the-planes-around TROs and the like. Mostly, we saw continued fallout from judges who decided it was cool to break the law in service of their political preferences and a media hell-bent on spinning a negative narrative against an administration doing exactly what it was elected to do.

There are two more cases being argued before SCOTUS on Monday:

  1. A.J.T. v. Osseo Area Schools — Whether the ADA and Rehabilitation Act require children with disabilities to satisfy a uniquely stringent "bad faith or gross misjudgment" standard when seeking relief for discrimination relating to their education.
  2. Soto v. United States — When a person makes a demand for money from the federal government pursuant to federal statute, what test should courts and agencies use to determine whether that statute includes a settlement procedure that displaces the default
procedures and limitations set forth in the Barring Act (31 U.S.C. § 3702)?

COMING ATTRACTIONS

Look for interesting tidbits to come out of the Trump-Johnson meeting Monday afternoon. There will be a ton of focus now on congressional efforts to get the rescissions package finalized and passed. (Expect drama.)

Look for some wild and woolly court rulings, too. And keep an eye on Iran and on India and Pakistan.

MORNING MUSING

I realize it's par for the course for us to wax nostalgic as we grow older — the closer we get to the finish line, the more road behind us there is to look back and reflect on. I'm certain that skews the perception and lends itself to the notion that "Things were just simpler back then." But it's hard to escape the sense that things really were simpler back before the Internet and smartphones governed our daily lives.

Not having those distractions forced us to live more in the moment — to be more present in all of our interactions. And because interactions were predominantly face-to-face, to treat one another (in general) with more common courtesy. I was a full-fledged adult in 1995 — had a bona fide job as a lawyer, a car, and, by the end of that year, a house with my then-future husband. So this isn't just sentimental reflections on life being simpler when you're a kid.

We've gone from "The Simple Life" to "It's Complicated," and I'm not particularly a fan. I know it's ironic for someone who makes a living in the digital media world to long for the days when it didn't exist, but I can't help thinking that — in so many ways — we were better off then than we are now.
