A government can't be run on emotion because a government does not produce anything itself. Taxpayers need to know their money is being used smartly and efficiently. Everything else is noise.

Yes, that's right, they're complaining about a bill that will keep local governments from enforcing gun control laws that simply don't exist, unless the state makes them exist, then they're enforceable.

The DOGErs still have to separate the wheat from the chaff, but no one in their right mind thinks that LEGAL immigration shot up to more than DOUBLE in a SINGLE YEAR to goose those Social Security numbers.

White House What's Up

President Donald Trump has dubbed Wednesday "Liberation Day" as his proposed tariffs are set to go into effect. He's marking the occasion in the afternoon with a "Make America Wealthy Again" event in the Rose Garden.

Keeping Up With the Cabinet

Sec. Defense - Pete Hegseth — Hegseth spent Tuesday at the U.S. Naval Academy

Attorney General - Pam Bondi — Bondi announced that federal prosecutors would seek the death penalty in the Luigi Mangione case.

Sec. Agriculture - Brooke Rollins — Rollins announced the axing of "Inflation Reduction Act" funding for trees to be planted at Barack Obama High School.

Sec. Labor - Lori Chavez-DeRemer — Chavez-DeRemer announced that the Labor Department is returning over $1 billion in unspent COVID funding to the U.S. Treasury.

Sec. Health & Human Services - Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — Kennedy welcomed FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary and NIH Director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya to HHS. He also acknowledged the realities of HHS layoffs and realignment of priorities while explaining their necessity.

Sec. Housing & Urban Development - Scott Turner — Turner is teaming up with Kennedy to "Make American Housing Healthy Again."

Sec. Transportation - Sean Duffy — Duffy met with the families of Flight 5342.

Full Court Press...

There's only one case set for oral argument before the Supreme Court today. Medina, Director SC Dept. of Health v. Planned Parenthood is set to address two questions:

  1. Whether the Medicaid Act's any-qualified-provider provision unambiguously confers a private right upon a Medicaid beneficiary to choose a specific provider.
  2. What is the scope of a Medicaid beneficiary's alleged right to choose a provider that a state has deemed disqualified?

Meanwhile, the court rulings on various Trump administration policies continue to roll in, including one out of San Francisco regarding Temporary Protected Status designation that seems to fly directly in the face of 9th Circuit precedent.

COMING ATTRACTIONS

Obviously, there's a bit of tension amongst the House GOP right now over the proxy vote issue. We'll keep an eye on that as there will as leadership and the Luna faction attempt to navigate their way past being at loggerheads.

Addendum: The Supreme Court is due to hand down some decisions today. We'll be keeping a lookout for those as well.

MORNING MUSING

I'm not particularly good at patience. If presented with a problem, my instinct is to fix it — as fast as possible. If presented with a thorny issue, I want to resolve it — yesterday. But one of the things the past decade has taught me is that it's okay to take a "wait and see" approach — particularly when it comes to all things Trump. I'm not an expert in economics and certainly not on tariffs. I see the merits of arguments for them and the merits of arguments against them, but I will freely admit: I don't know the answer on this. I don't know if the tariffs proposed by President Trump are going to work to our advantage or disadvantage — or maybe a bit of both. I do know that lighting my hair on fire over it isn't likely to be productive. So, I'm willing to wait and see. In the meantime, I'll simply wish a very Happy Liberation Day to all who celebrate.
