As I said before, when Democrat Bill de Blasio was the Big Apple’s mayor, conservatives including Fox News host Tucker Carlson only half-jokingly talked about how there was a running contest between de Blasio and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, also a Democrat, to determine who America’s worst mayor was.
I gave the edge to failed 2020 presidential candidate de Blasio at the time. But after he left office, that left Lightfoot holding the distinguished award.
As we all know, Lightfoot is now on her way out the door as Chicagoans let her know last month that the time for her to pass the torch had come.
Predictably, Lightfoot blamed racism and sexism for her defeat instead of owning up to her many failures on crime, business, and homelessness among other things.
Another area where Lightfoot has been a spectactular failure has been on the First Amendment, as we learned not just when she implemented a racist interview policy for a brief time where white reporters were excluded but also when she – via the Chicago PD – had the press credentials of a conservative journalist revoked simply because he asked tough questions and allegedly was too “aggressive” with Lightfoot and her security detail.
That journalist, William Kelly, was in attendance at the most recent Chicago City Council meeting, and addressed Lightfoot during the “public comment” portion of the meeting since he is still not allowed press privileges (he filed a lawsuit last summer over the matter, which is said to be pending).
As per the norm, Kelly did not hold back, stating that she had retaliated against him because videos of his confrontations with her during press conferences went viral and embarrassed her:
“I used to be sitting over there with my colleagues, but I’m standing over here,” he said pointing toward the press pool. “You told me that crime was down, my videos went viral, amassed millions likes and shares, and it was hurting your re-election campaign, so you revoked my media credential.”
He also went off on what he says was all the harm she caused the Windy City, comments he’s made before at prior briefings:
“You shut down our schools, you shut down the churches, you shut down the businesses. You did the one thing I thought could never happen: As somebody who was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, I never thought in my life that I would ever see the city of Chicago brought down so low,” reporter William Kelly slammed Lightfoot.
“I hope that, after today’s city council meeting, you will pack your suitcase and get the hell out of my city.”

I’ve seen some people describe Kelly as an “obnoxious” media figure but considering how Lightfoot treated city workers, her staff, and the press, I figure what’s good for the goose is good for the gander in this case.
Lightfoot’s last day in office will be May 15th. Whichever Democrat wins the April runoff – Paul Vallas or Brandon Johnson – will succeed her.
